28. New Orleans Saints
Let’s all take a moment to appreciate the Saints for always playing their role. General manager Mickey Loomis scoffs at the salary cap, and thus New Orleans is in the worst cap shape in the league heading into the offseason ($83.9 million over the cap). The other thing Loomis always does is figure it out by the time the fall arrives, although Saints fans might be starting to wonder about the long-term strategy. New Orleans hasn’t made the playoffs or won double-digit games in the last three seasons.

Sour note:

Less than $500k in dead cap, too. With a #1 QB salary on the books.

*ETA: 2 NFC South teams ranked below us, showing just how terrible our division is

Saints leadership is too stupid to be as good as KC

Mahomes did himself and the NFL a favor by calling KC to draft him

I don't have a subscription, but the headline says power ranking. I find this ranking utterly ridiculous if it's just based on team talent.

Ouch...

I think we are a little better than #28. Not much better. Maybe 18-23.

Not sure how many people can dispute this. At the very least, this team has shown they are a fringe playoff team that just isn't good enough to get in. Not sure how that equates to being the 5th worst team unless you are putting all the weight on the cap situation.

Aging Cam, AK, and DD, uncertainty on Latt & Ram coupled with the atrocious drafting since 2017 and it’s not hard to project the Saints in the bottom 20s.

Like this year, with the NFC South weakness the Saints record for 2024 will likely have the Saints looking better than they really are. We’re in the 3rd inning of a lost decade due to horrific ownership and management.

SFP makes a post about NFL power rankings.

It only addresses teams’ salary cap.

Seems on par.

I read that earlier today. I think Atlanta was 29 and Carolina was 32.

What exactly should the Saints power rating be? They didn’t make the playoffs so no better than 15. Though 4 other 9-8 also did not make the playoffs including the Bengals so at best 16-19? I’d rather be 28 and get a top 5 pick at least than #18.

End of the day, power ranking don't mean shite and don't affect draft status (not that you were implying it did). I think people are just blown away that "there are only 4 teams worse than the Saints". Carolina & Atlanta are obviously 2 of them; but it looks like there should be another 6-8 "ranked lower"

Wash, NE, AZ, Tenn, NYG, Chi, LV & Sea all have a ton of question marks and several have worse rosters than the Saints. But because Loomis plays games with the cap, 6 of those teams are considered better than the Saints?

Dude I know the draft order isn’t determined by power rankings

I’m saying I’d rather be the 5th worst team vs being in a mediocre loop.

NFL deadcap rankings for 2023 below. Top 4 teams all made the playoffs - Bucs, Eagles, Rams, and Packers. With OVER 50 million in dead cap.

Saints at 12th with 24million. Comparison, Detroit and San Fran are at 17/18 million in deadcap.

(1) Saints deadcap was decent in 2023.

(2) how deadcap you have does not necessarily mean your team sucks.

28 a little low. 24 probably more accurate. Our record is inflated due to the crap surrounding us in the division though.

in a horrid division, with a easy arse schedule, and caught several breaks in that schedule....and still not a playoff team.

This team was not good and had 2 wins over teams above .500 I believe.

but arguing if they're the 5th worst team in the league or closer to 10-12th worst sums up the dennis allen era pretty well

Because:

We aren't going to get better, we have no money to do so and don't have significant or high draft picks.

Our players are getting older and we can't get rid of them.

The schedule this year will be MUCH MUCH harder on paper.
