Saints plan to play Kelvin Banks Jr. at multiple positions this summer

Head coach Kellen Moore indicated that Banks would spent time at multiple spots this summer with the goal of finding the team’s best five-man OL combination, according to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.
During rookie minicamp, Banks lined up at left and right tackle, as well as left guard, per Underhill. He could contribute at any of the three spots for the Saints as a rookie after the team started several different O-line combinations last season. 2024 first-rounder Taliese Fuaga started all 17 games at left tackle with Trevor Penning replacing an injured Ryan Ramczyk on the right side. Ramczyk retired in April and Penning is in the last season of his contract, so the Saints may be looking to identify a long-term pair of tackles this season.
Since all of Fuaga’s college starts came at right tackle, the Saints could look to move Fuaga back to his natural position and allow Banks to remain at left tackle. If New Orleans is more comfortable keeping Fuaga on the blind side, Banks could then flip to the right tackle, though such transitions can be challenging. (The Chargers successfully moved 2024 first-rounder Joe Alt from left to right tackle as a rookie.)

Makes sense. Ideally we'd end up with Banks at LT and Fuaga at RT, but I don't disagree with the "best five" approach

I would think this doesn't matter much anymore since Fuaga played every snap of his first professional season at LT and did a damn good job.

This sounds to me like: We are SURE that McCoy and Ruiz are C/RG
We know Penning's limitations, but not sure if LG or RT is better for him and so we'll see and fight over the next steps

For me: Banks, Fuaga, McCoy, Ruiz, Penning is the best starting 5. Especially when we want to run the ball this year with young qb.
then Fuaga is your first backup tackle and Radunz is the first backup guard.

Seems like this is a diplomatic way to say they are trying to figure out where best to hide Penning to do the least damage.

I don’t want to base our OL on Trevor Penning

i wouldn't count out Radunz beaing out Penning for the LG position, honestly...
Penning has an uphill battle to remain a starter, IMO... i think when all is said and done, Banks will be our LT, Fuaga going back to RT and the winner of the Penning/Radunz battle at LG will start there

It’s not. It’s basing it on being the best line for this team this year. Don’t overthink it.

I think penning will be a decent guard. Fun fact, he actually had better run block grades than Fuaga. He’s just horrible in pass pro

Biggest problem will probably be how tall he is

I really agree with you on that! Radunz isn’t really bad and it’s a new position for Penning. But I really wouldn’t be surprised by that neither.

Have you seen him play or just looked at his contract?

Per PFF
Leaving Fuaga and Penning at their positions last year would be pretty dumb unless you like pain
Fuaga
65.7 OVR (52/140)
62.2 PB (77/140)
69.5 RB (41/140)
10 penalties (121/140)
6 sacks (120/140)
Penning
60.2 OVR (75/140)
51.6 PB (104/140)
70.1 RB (36/140)
13 penalties (131/140)
5 sacks (111/140)
Radunz is pretty arse too. You don’t want him starting unless absolutely needed. Let Penning give guard a go, Banks to LT and Fuaga at RT. Radunz for depth
Radunz
57 OVR (91/136)
63.9 PB (59/136)
53.6 RB (112/136)
5 penalties (91/136)
6 sacks (126/136)

He’s not good, it’s also an admission Salvaderi is a bust.
