The New Orleans #Saints  are expected to name Joe Woods their defensive coordinator, per sources. Woods, the Cleveland Browns DC from 2020-22, reunites with Dennis Allen from their Oakland Raiders days.

At end of the day, DA is calling the defense so if he gets someone he works well with in this spot then might as well. I believe he was also a position coach the year DA was DC in Denver too. Might as well let him ride with his people if his heads on the line

The Saints will run Dennis Allen’s scheme. Allen will call the plays and ultimately be responsible for the defense. Joe Woods will be Allen’s top assistant and will likely help out with the defensive backs, which has been his position of expertise over the years

What could go wrong?

I would say in the roles they will have, Grantham and Woods are good hires. Its DA's defense but both are long time guys that have run competent defenses. They've both had issues but they aren't calling the actual shots. I think in that context these are good hires.

Still can't get remotely excited about this team with DA as HC and the offensive staff still in tact

Well I'm glad we got the defense sorted out. It was the real bugaboo holding us back this season. Way to go Denny.

He is as the head coach. He has zero passion. Who do you think is keeping pete?

Who do you think begged pete to take the job when he didn't want it?

Going to really suck when we end up tanking to get Caleb Williams, draft him, then he requests a trade forcing the Saints to trade him or out of the pick in the draft.

Maybe this is a great hire who knows. But struggling HCs replacing coordinators with guys they are familiar with doesn’t seem to end well very often.

Let’s hope that is the extent to which we recreate the Dennis Allen raider era coaching staff.

Right up Allen’s ally. A guy whose teams have gone 37-45 as defensive coordinator. (His first year with the Browns they went 11-5. They finished worse each season after.)

Looks like he was LBer coach for Northwestern State for a bit back in the 90s.

Worth noting: #Saints assistant secondary coach Cory Robinson, who ran the DB room last season, let his contract expire and is a free agent. A bright young assistant who just coached in the Senior Bowl.
Wonderful

Pretty deceiving. He was there from 2020-2022. Here's Cleveland's total defense from 2019-2022...

2019 - 22nd
2020 - 17th
2021 - 5th
2022 - 14th

He improved them his first year, and he has a really good defense last season. This season they fell off, but they weren't horrible

ETA... if woods deserved to fired, apparently stefanski did too...

Cleveland offense ranks the same period...
2020 - 16th
2021 - 18th
2022 - 14th

The defense looks liked they matched or surpassed the offense all 3 years
