Saints have run the ball 2nd most in league following an incompletion on 1st down

What is up with Jax? Never throw on 1st? T-Law is so good all of his 1st down passes are caught? Always throw on 2nd & 10 following an incomplete pass?

2nd and 10 should be the Taysom.

You're either picking up a usual conservative solid running play or if they mix in the Taysom throw option, its a great down to fool the defense.

JAX has not once all season run the ball on 2nd and 10? That is crazy to have no diversification at all!

Looking at the graph again, what I see as interesting is 14 (Buf to NOLA) of the 32 teams are in that "balanced 60/40 split between run/pass on 2nd & 10. Naturally, Saints are on the more conservative side.

The interesting ones to me are Wash, Indy & LAR that almost always pass on 2nd & 10. Wonder at one point do defenses just start pining their ears back assuming it's a pass when those 3 have 2nd & 10 (also assuming a decent sample size)

I think most people in this thread are only looking at where we fall on the chart and not the actual numbers. Weekend Warrior seems to be the only one who gets what we are looking at.

We are not extreme in terms of run or pass. In fact we are less predictable than half the league. If we have five 2nd and 10s, we run 3 times and pass 2. That's balance, and a safe balance if you are picking up yards on the runs to make 3rd downs shorter.

Imo I think we are passing on first down too much, and usually with deeper drop backs, but I don't have numbers to back that up so I could be wrong. If I am right about that, I think that is where we are going wrong and digging more holes than needed on 2nd downs.

That has always been the plan under Carmichael.

If we attempt a throw on 1st down and it is incomplete they almost always come back with a run to bring it to 3rd and 6 or 7.

Same thing with the 1-3 yard pass on 2nd and 7 to 9. We will throw a short pass to set up 3rd and 5 or 3rd and 6.

Its automatic and it was noticeable LAST year. Every time we throw on first down and its incomplete, we run the ball on second down.

Pete Carmichael could get out schemed at the HS level.
