I don't know about this. Some good leadership could turn James life around though.

I’m a little confused on why just a one year contract. I’m sure that’s what he wanted, but I feel like we all think Brees will play this year and next. If he had any shot at being the QB of the future, you’d want a two year deal.
1 year deal because:
If Brees gets hurt, he’ll capitalize like Teddy did & be able to negotiate a better deal next year
If Brees retires, he’ll be able to sign with the Saints to a longer term deal
No one was offering him a starting job. 1yr $8mil then reevaluate next year

Has Salary come out yet? Was really hoping for a 4-6 mill type contract

Jameis is only 26, his future is salvageable

So desperate for a backup quarterback.

Squints has tons of talent. Hopefully Payton can fix his brain and we can all dine on Ws

Agree. Winston has always had the physical talent to be a very good NFL QB, but lack of maturity and commitment to himself, along with bad company have been a problem since his days at Florida St. One thing for sure, he will not be able to bring those past and present issues in the Saints locker room with the leadership on this team. I think he is worth a shot to see what Sean Payton and the way he could gel in with the rest of the good character people on this team. If he can do that, he may be able to renew himself and career. If not, he will be out after his one year deal and never get another shot.Ball is in this dude’s court. I’m glad we signed him and not Cam Newton.

Well said.
This is a very low risk move with an potentially EXTREMELY high reward.

Slick?
Nobody was beating doen his door.
He's cheap (somewhat) insurance. If Drew goes down and if Hill chokes, then he will play.
Surprised with all the insider sources ST has and all the wannabe bloggers, nobody called this move beforehand.

If Winston’s vision is that much better, this could be really interesting to see if Payton can make him the best version of himself. Definitely a low risk, super high reward. He has talent but he’s kind of an idiot. Maybe a year in the system with Payton and company can get him going along with his vision being fixed.

This is a very good signing.
Jameis will be the gameday “backup” that allows us to use the Taysom package still in games, which is a huge plus for our offense.
It’s my opinion that in the event of a multi-week Brees injury, Taysom would likely still be the starter. But for surprise gameday injury, it would be Jameis.
Jameis may not have been a great starter last year, but as a backup? He is very capable. He has been a high volume passer which matches our offense. He’s probably immediately the best backup in the NFL. I also believe that Drew and Sean can be an incredible influence on him, both personally and as a player.
Most likely, we will drum up some “hype” around keeping him next offseason in the media, that we’re impressed with him, and a team will sign him at a high enough value to get us another comp pick.
Of course, there’s also the very minor shot that he’s actually really good in our offense and he’s the future. There’s no doubt he has incredible talent and potential. I don’t think that’s likely but it’s still possible.
This is an absolutely money signing. No downside.

He has been used to trying to carry his team at all times. I'm not a big fan but doing that ends up making your numbers look worse than your talent. Even Drew has had some pretty bad INT seasons when he was pressing and trying to force the ball in because the Saints weren't being very competitive.
Bottom line is if Sean and Drew can get him to stop trying to win the game on every pass, a lot of his poor "in game" decision making goes away. Some of his other head problems may also go away if he just grows up a little.
And no eating the W please.
