I love Zach dude had incredible guts and worked his arse off to get legitimately better in a short time. With that being said I'm not sure he will ever have a quick enough release to really run SP's offense.

If at no real cost, then sure give him a look

Well yeah, he's from LSU. But seriously it wouldn't hurt.

Not very good. Grayson will be a much better qb shortly than Mett ever will be.

He'd be worth bringing in for a workout and camp arm. If he beats out Grayson, so be it. He probably wouldn't beat out McCown since Brees likes his veteran presence on the sideline.

"he's slow afoot and has a slow release. He'd be a terrible fit for this offense. I do like his talent tho"

I may be higher on Mett than you, but I agree with the sentiment generally. I see Mett on a team that has a power running game, runs play action, and looks to take shots down the field. Not sure that quick, precision passing is his thing.

I don't understand why people would think this is a good idea. Even when staffed with serviceable players, over the past few years the offense has depended on Brees' ability to avoid pressure, step up into a collapsing pocket, and make multiple reads. Mettenberger has shown no ability whatsoever to avoid pressure or make the multiple reads that have been a hallmark of Brees in Payton's offense.

NFL Live on ESPN had Zach Mettenberger in their top three available QB's. But, they questioned why he was released. They speculated lack of motivation and personality as the potential problems. They did say that some OC may feel his talent is worth the risk and opt to try and fix him.

Drew is one of the best I've ever seen at being mobile within the pocket, eluding pressure and getting throws off....and there were several times the last year or two where our o-line nearly got him killed. I'd be ok with taking a flyer on Mett on if he sits for a while behind Drew and doesn't play behind this o-line.

article title for perspective out of Louisiana...

https://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/204059/historically-zach-mettenberger-has-no-chance

quote:

Mettenberger's career Total Quarterback Rating is 16.5 (on a scale of 0-100). He's been sacked 31 times and fumbled eight times in his 14 games, a big reason why he has produced the worst QBR of any quarterback with at least 10 starts since the inception of the statistic in 2006. It also ranks No. 64 among the 68 quarterbacks who have started at least one game sine he was drafted in 2014.

He reminds me of Drew a lot.

Drew Bledsoe, but less mobile.

i'm assuming the griffin neal release has a lot to do with zach's availability.

or none.

Not a bad idea except those "spots" are not free. Also they are limited to a narrow 53.
Meaning Mett sitting on the bench is one less guy to help now and one less guy that can come in and contribute when someone goes down.
Mett just sitting on the sidelines combing his hair does little for me or the team in trying to win over these next couple of years.

If Mett is serious he should go play in the CFL so he can get the most reps possible in game time.
He needs to play to get better not sit on a bench watching Rivers or Brees the next 2-3 years.

Aren't most CFL QBs mobile types?

I don't see any harm in bringing in Mettenberger for a tryout. Grayson has not done anything yet to prove that he's an NFL caliber QB.

By the way, it was pretty hard to watch that horrible Titans O-Line suddenly look great against the Saints Defense last year. That game made me so mad.

He has a live arm and has shown that he can be coached up some, and he did respectably as a lower rd rookie pressed into starting.

I don't know if the Saints are the right fit offensively, but he's got a chance in the right system.

Hate to say this, but honestly, he'd probably be a good fit with the Falcons. Reasonably experienced and young backup, similar tools to Matt Ryan; and Ryan is the right age to allow Mett to grow without urgency.
