For whatever reason, many people (including a portion of the Saints’ fanbase) don’t realize how good Williams has been to start his career. Yes, he missed a very important tackle back in 2017, but he has also graded out as one of the best safeties in the NFL over his first three years in the league — he's been the fifth-highest-graded safety in the league (tied with Micah Hyde) to be exact. As Williams heads into a contract year, there is a chance he hits the market next offseason. That would be a golden opportunity for a team to pick up a young free safety who can make plays on the back end. Minkah Fitzpatrick and the Pittsburgh Steelers just showed how that can be a game changer for a defense this past season. It would be in the best interest of the Saints to find a way to keep Williams in town.

2017 had the missed tackle
2018 had 2 int's and 3 pd's in 16 games.

I've bitched a lot in the past of how we used him often times on a deep arse island where he never really was able to get anywhere nor do anything.

He played better last year. Not sure i see paying him top FS monies just yet. I like his character etc so its a definite important year for Marcus.

He’s been top 5 all 3 years. Not hearing his name is a good thing. He plays that deep island because he can. Not many dudes can do that.

2018 we had a top 4 nfl worst passing defense. not hearing his name and having 2 int's and 3 pd's was not good

Having Sharper for the SB run really spoiled me as to what I expect out of a FS. I know there are a lot of other factors involved, but he was always creating plays.

Didn't PJ Williams start opposite of Lattimore in 2018 for the first few weeks? We got torched in several games to start the season. That prompted the Saints to acquire Eli Apple and Williams settled in at slot corner. There was a noticeable improvement after that from what I remember. They weren't the Legion of Boom but we didn't have nearly as many shoot outs in the second half of the season.

Good players don't get INTs. Only bad dbs even get thrown at or those who take risks.

Peterson used to never get interceptions.

Not to mention what Williams does for the run defense just by being on the field. His ability to play single-high affords us another body in the box. Helped Vonn really shine last year IMO.

This is a very important bit on Williams and what he brings to the defense. His ability allowed Bell to thrive (beyond what his obvious market was in FA). Wouldn’t be surprised if the Saints do in fact plan to pay Williams and allow themselves to take more of a plug & play approach at the SS spot if necessary.

Agreed. Even a HOFer like Ed Reed had "down years" in turnovers.

But for statistical analysis for those crying:

First 3 seasons:
Marcus Williams: 46 games, 2 FFs and 10 INTs, 23 PDs
Earl Thomas: 48 games, 3 FFs and 10 INTs, 23 PDs

Thomas is definitely the better tackler, but when it comes to being a ball hawk, that's a pretty damn good start to a career if he becomes earl thomas.

Nah, Crawley went from a B player in 2017 to a D player in 2018. Then they got Apple to replace Crawley.

Lattimore was also a chunk for the first few weeks too.

He is a lot like Peat. He is good +90% of his plays, but when he makes a mistake, it is glaring.

That's true only for man cover corners or for guys that play insane zone coverage.

Williams not getting "big" numbers is more due to how Allen sets up his defense, with the FS playing 20-25 yards deep most plays and having zero impact on the run or short passes.

But the funny thing is, and this is what pff does poorly, is that we gave up a shite ton of deep passes the last 2 years (2017 we actually did well). But because of how pff asigns coverage the blame is often very misplaced.

A lot of coaches talk about how the assign blame to one guy in coverage because he was the closest, when in fact that guy was covering someone else's arse and actually made a great play even getting there.

There have been plenty of plays where Williams was supposed to be covering over the top with the corner playing shallow man but Williams read the play way late and the corner gets blame when Williams was supposed to help over the top.

It's almost like Fred Thomas/Josh Bullocks all over, though Williams isn't nearly that bad. But Thomas took the brunt of things when Bullocks was supposed to be the help and was never there/was way late.

I saw way more of that last year from Williams than I did his first 2 years. It was pretty bad at times and Lattimore, Apple, and PJ took most of the misplaced blame.

True or False:

do the Saints even comeback into in that game in Minnesota without his interception in the 2nd half?

lots of posters on here want laron landries who can hit hard but get burned often. a single high FS is the antithesis of their idea of foobaw

this is the most overlooked contribution, especially considering he's criticized on here for lack of production in the run game

the fact that we can play the run with him 15-20 yards away from the muck of the running game IS a value to the run game

Talk about misleading... numbers don’t speak to impact ... I love Williams and would sign him but he isn’t in the same stratosphere as Thomas

I don't think Sharp gets near enough local or national run for having a freakishly dominating year.
