OT: New Orleans Bowl / Dome question
Posted by Palmetto08

Sorry for the non-Saints question but I figured I'd get more serious replies on this board.
I'm going to the NOLA Bowl next Wednesday night. Kickoff is not until 8:15 and I can't imagine there being more than 15,000 people there. It will just be me and my young daughter so likely leaving at halftime. We're staying at the South Alabama team hotel (Marriott on Canal) and it looks to be about a mile walk from the Dome. I don't mind the walk to the stadium before the game as we'll be with a lot of USA fans but the walk back has me a little concerned due to lack of crowd and time of night.
How safe would the walk be from the Dome to the Marriott at 10-10:30 on a random Wednesday night? Would it be safer to grab a cab? I really appreciate any and all advice.
I love visiting New Orleans and glad South Alabama got the NOLA bowl invite!

I want to say you'd be fine walking but I err on the side of caution when in NOLA with my kids now.
I'd catch a ride or if it's an option-try staying at the Hyatt Regency right by the Dome.

Don't spend enough time in that area anymore to know the current feel of the land, but how young is young daughter? It's about a mile walk (20 minutes), so under 10 I'd probably catch a cab/uber, over 10 I'd feel it out based on the vibe in the street. There are a few restaurants going down Poydras that you could jump in and out of if things felt off.
By all means, I'd stay as far away from Bourbon/Carondelet and Canal as possible

all of canal is pretty shady. there will be bums and every type of riff raff on every corner. on some of the busier streets from canal toward the dome there will be bums all around for a block or so back toward the dome. There used to be a green space that was full of tents where bums slept on one of the main roads heading that way. I wouldnt chance it with my kid. You will be a target with nobody around and I doubt there will be much happening on a week night. Id call a uber or catch a cab.
Ive done it hundreds of times but crime is worse now and I surely wouldnt walk around new orleans late at night with just me and my young daughter.

Is showing $10 for the Uber ride back or might get bumped up a bit that night for the bowl fans but it is a pretty good mile walk and though Poydras is not too bad as others mentioned compared to Canal and is doable. Or, if have the coin just uber it

I agree...Poydras down toward the river is NOT like Canal to the river ! ALL kinds of shady riff-raff up and down Canal these days....thanks teedy !

What few officers are left in the NOPD will probably be in that area because of the game. Stay on the trafficked streets and there is a better than average chance that you will make it.

Like many have said Uber door to door.

Have a good time Sir
there is no shortage of work to do this month at my job otherwise, I'd be going as well.
I don't know if they still do this but there use to be buses that would leave from Bel-Air Mall and take people over to Saints games back in the day.
I don't know if South does anything like that. South is playing at Tulane next September so just something to look into. I would suggest it for the Bowl game but saw where y'all already to stay at the Marriott.

100% you take a cab or Uber
No chance I’d walk if I were you

The odds are you’ll make it fine if you walk, but some dude got whacked on Canal in the 1100 block (not far from your path) yesterday during the Pels game in broad daylight.
You should have a 97% chance or better of surviving, especially walking in a pack. The hunters are feral and seek the weakest amongst us.
The game should be at East Jeff stadium or maybe Yulman if they have to keep in Orleans Parish. Would increase the survival rate of the visitors significantly.

Thanks for all of the replies. It’s greatly appreciated!
I ended up just getting a room at Hyatt. We’re sitting on the visitor side so hotel looks to be just outside the entrance of that side of stadium. I’m assuming it’s close enough to Dome to make it safely back without too much trouble.
Hate to see what’s happened to New Orleans.

I’m a born and raised NOLA resident and I would walk. You are not and shouldn’t. Take an Uber and know for a fact that you and your daughter will arrive safely.
Edit: saw your last post. From the Hyatt you are good. Enjoy the game with your daughter.

You would've been fine walking up Poydras to the game, but with a kid I wouldve definitely ubered back afterwards.
In any case, moving to the Hyatt was the best option by far. It is completely safe walking in and around Champions Square and the Superdome from the Hyatt. Literally a few steps away.
Not sure what your plans are the day before/day after the game, but if you have time, the WW II museum is walking distance from the Hyatt and in my opinion, New Orleans #1 attraction for a family.

Live about 60 miles from NO. Wife [no pics] and I use to visit at least twice month.
Have walked from Dome to quarter, Harrahs, river numerous times. Walking New Orleans use to be fun.
Thugs use to be kept from business/tourist areas by police. Now police presence almost non-existent. No fear of police by the culture.
Concealed carry not the answer. If you shoot one of the local thugs in self defense, I'm assuming you are white, you have to deal with a black, Soros DA.
Cab,uber or Hyatt. New Orleans is finished.

Catch a ride. There was a murder on Canal St. over the weekend at 4:30 in the evening over someone stealing a bike.
One year I stayed downtown for Mardi Gras. On Mardi Gras night we were going back to our hotel with kids in tow, and suddenly we were on a dark street with a crazy dude saying things about us under his breath. I powered through that street as fast as possible while looking over my shoulder for him and an accomplice. That could happen to you.

That walk is further than you think and I would never do it after dark unless I was in a crowd of people. Take Uber or taxi. Just not worth the risk with your daughter.

I know the game didn't work out too well but otherwise how was everything? Hope you and your daughter had a nice time.

Hoping this guy and his daughter made it safely out of the warzone that is New Orleans these days…
