re: My fear is that the Carr signing puts us in NFL purgatory

No one complains when the Saints move on from or cut bad players.
One of the major issues with our strategy is NOT being able to cut our bad players. Once they restructure and the pro-ration and dead cap increases, we're stuck with no options other than extending them. See: Taysom Hill.
It's going to be VERY interesting if they do this with Peat this offseason. We can get out from under his contract OR guarantee we're stuck with him for years and years.

Why? The salary cap.
So the cap exists?
I never said it didn’t. I’m saying everyone has to cut players and melting about cap space is not warranted.
The Saints have decided to play the salary cap game of continually carrying dead cap space every year. Sometimes that keeps us from signing a particular player. But it also allows us to sign players we would not have been able to sign otherwise.
You can criticize who we have re-signed and who we let walk (keeping Peat and letting Vonn Bell walk still pisses me off) but we aren’t in some parallel universe where only the Saints can’t re-sign players.
I’ll take this any day over the penny pinching I had to endure as a fan in the late 80s and 90s where we never kept anyone.

The Rams were on the brink of a super bowl without Stafford, including 1 SB appearance
The NFL propped up the Rams all season long for their Superbowl run and during the NFC championship game against the Saints, the NFL made it obvious the Rams were the choice.
With the backlash and criticism for the NFL by fans and media for the obvious no call debacle, the NFL changed the script to let the Patriots win the Superbowl against the Rams.
The NFL eventually rewarded the new stadium and market for the Rams with a Stafford led Superbowl. The game did not lack a little officiating tomfoolery.

We were already there.

Where is this pretty good roster? Cause this team has missed the playoffs the last two years. Good teams don't do that. Our best players are getting old. Our cap situation is beyond fricked. Our coach sucks, we got an average to below-average quarterback to lead this franchise. This roster ain't competing for anything outside this division and that's only because it's historically bad.
My unpopular opinion before the season started. I got ripped to shreds for thinking Carr was below average and we wouldn't make the playoffs.

There were many of us who didn’t like the move. Don’t worry by next season half this board will drink the kool aide again.

I refuse. I will bump this thread every time I start to believe a little.
I am out on whatever this era is.

Saints Talk is all about this. They don't want titles. They want to make the playoffs in the shittiest division in the NFL.
Any reasonable fan who played sports and has an understanding of competition is satisfied with making the playoffs and “competing” for a chance the win the SBowl/Championship.
Your fav team actually winning championships is rare. LSU has 4 total Nattys.
The saints have 1. New Englad has 6.
Basically, You are an idiot and youre soft. Learn how to have reasonable expectations for things.
Basing your fandom off “whether your fav team” won a championship only is DUMB.
Folks who compete/competed get that you always compete.
Not quit because you cant win the game/championship. Pussy.

We didn't even do that though

It's about making the most +EV moves to increase your chances of winning a title the most.
I'm not shocked you don't understand this.

Only idiots who deceive themselves believe this. This is rah rah bullshite for 85-IQ types who don't like thinking.

Nobody is saying the Saints should fold.
Tell me what is so intelligent about building a mediocre team who is so shackled they can't rise above that level?
We are at a position where we may make the playoffs IF (1) the NFC South remains historically bad; (2) the NFL graces us with an incredibly soft schedule otherwise; and (3) we are incredibly lucky in terms of injury luck.
You want this to be our team's apex? 1 playoff game at best, but more than likely not making the playoffs?
Lowering your expectations to mediocrity is the true pussy mentality.

Correct
And it’s miserable

What is bad about winning the division and making the playoffs?
Nothing at all. But this org seems like it's moving farther away from this, not toward it. And I think the Carr contract was just another step in the wrong direction.
