I think they gave up one of next years to trade up in the 6th.

While normally I don’t agree with post draft grades.
We did not do well

Sean Payton & Co. took quarterback Ian Book (133) on Day 3, and I had a seventh-round grade on him. I would have taken Jamie Newman. Book's ceiling is as a backup
The arrogance of thinking you judge quarterbacks better than Sean Payton.
This is the guy who scolded the entire NFL because Jimmy Clausen wasn’t a first round pick.

This is not aimed specifically at Kiper, because he by FAR doesn't have a monopoly on this, but...
...one of the most aggravating things to me about draft coverage is this obsession with the concept of "value". As in Player A is great "value" as a 3rd round selection, but just not worth taking in the 2nd round. I might have the whole concept of a player draft completely wrong.
I've always been under the assumption that the goal for each team was to add talented players, ideally more talented than the options they have before the draft. In a perfect world these players match up with the team's "needs" as they understand them. Once the pick is made I don't care one bit which round they were selected in...the added player's "value" is wholly a function of his level of utility to his team.
If the player pool were some type of durable goods rather than humans, each with set and unchanging worth, then yeah, you can argue an actual value assigned to each slot in each round. But when the pool is composed of something as unpredictable as young humans performing a physical and injury-inducing activity...I can't buy the idea that pre-defined value can be determined that accurately.
If a team ends up with upgraded talent at spots they identified as ones at which they needed to upgrade, do they get knocked on the "value" thing if they added each of those players a round or two before the pundits had them going?

They gave up their 6th and the 7th they acquired from Jacksonville

Mel is a TV celebrity first.....it is all for the dough and the show!
The fact his name is mentioned here....means he is succeeding! Sports Talk is huge in this country.

Mel is paid for opinions. Get over it people. If he deferred to coach’s opinions on everything, he’d be unemployed

There is a reason “Mel’s best available” tend to drop for long periods of time. He’s nothing more than a guy used to familiarize people with the available players.
Just off the top of my head, I remember CGJ being at the top of ‘Mels Best available for almost two rounds before we got him. I’m sure no one is complaining about him.
And I recall the same with Everson Griffin the year he came out. Mel had a 2nd round grade on him and he was at the top of his list for almost two rounds before getting drafted in the 4th. He turned out to be a pro bowler.
Some of you just discounting Mel like he knows nothing is hilarious. Mels not perfect but neither is any gm.
I disagreed with some of his opinions before but I think he nailed the opinion of our draft this year. Hope both of us are wrong.

I think the draft was arguably solid until we picked Ian Book. Selection feels very Graysony. Hope I am wrong. In the bottom of the 4th, we definitely could have picked a player that was at least a backup or a special teams contributor. The only way this Book selection helps us this year, is if Winston wins QB1, and because of the presence of Book, we are able to use Taysom in his normal Swiss Army Knife role. That’s the only way picking Book adds any value to the team this season.

Yea, really wanted Brevin Jordan with that 4th rounder. He would make a nice #2 te to pair with Trautman for the future. Shaun Wade was also available. He was 1st team all American in the country. How bad could he be?

But what did Bill Tobin’s Postman think about the Saints draft?
Posted on 5/2/21 at 12:46 pm to Giantkiller
I watched a bit of their draft show on ESPN. It was a complete joke. That Colts GM couldn't have said it better about this guy knowing less than his postman.

Who cares? The only thing that matters this season is the QB position... if neither Winston or Hill is the long term answer then we have much bigger problems than whether or not we reached for a DE.

I was proud of the Saints for not giving up any 2022 draft picks this weekend. It shows those picks are at a premium and this was a big reason why no trades were made.
Im glad they didn't but they tried like hell to give them up. Teams just weren't biting.
