New Orleans Saints: C+

Top needs: WR, CB, LB

New Orleans went 12-4 last season but lost a slew of free agents because of salary-cap issues, including Trey Hendrickson, Jared Cook, Emmanuel Sanders and Sheldon Rankins. Oh, and future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees retired. So this is a team in a different situation than it has been in the last few years, with Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston going to battle it out to replace Brees and some significant depth issues on its roster.

I like Payton Turner (28), but I would have liked him more in Round 2. There were wide receivers and corners on the board who could have made a bigger Year 1 impact than Turner, who is better against the run and is still developing as a pass-rusher. I don't see him as a starter over Cam Jordan or Marcus Davenport.

Linebacker Pete Werner (60), though, has a chance to be the starting middle linebacker in New Orleans. He locked down Penn State's Pat Freiermuth in coverage, and he has some range. Paulson Adebo (76) is a 6-foot-1 corner who opted out of last season. He has an inconsistent 2019 season, but he has top-50 traits. Sean Payton & Co. took quarterback Ian Book (133) on Day 3, and I had a seventh-round grade on him. I would have taken Jamie Newman. Book's ceiling is as a backup.
That's a lot of reaches on my board and not much value, from Rounds 1-7. And they didn't take a receiver until late on Day 3.

Sorry, Saints fans -- I don't love this class.

Draft grades right after the draft are pointless. No one knows how this guys will turn out. Pretty much every year, some of the supposed best classes turn out to be the worst. Ask the question again in 2 years.

I remember reading stuff like this when the Chiefs traded up for Mahomes.

Kiper has his board and he’s very insecure about it. Doesn’t matter if the player is the right fit for the team, he has his rankings so if you want a great grade from Kiper just pick the best available player and receive pats on the back from the media.

He went undrafted, Mel.

But, on paper, it's not an unreasonable why Mel might view this class as underwhelming. Hell, we have Saints fans bitching about it.

This has to be one of the weakest draft classes for the Saints in many years. I agree with Mel.

And this would be a priority and first thing to mention because?

Not one player drafted in the NFL has ever played a down of pro ball....its a huge crap shoot.

So, all teams should get a C! You should grade drafts after 4 years and see who gets a second contract!

There is a reason “Mel’s best available” tend to drop for long periods of time. He’s nothing more than a guy used to familiarize people with the available players.

I mean why would anyone take this seriously when the QB that Mel would have taken didn’t even get drafted?

Well that’s all I need to hear. Mel hates the draft so naturally it will turn out great.

You really never know. A few years ago, we got Kamara in the 3rd round, looking back he should have been top 10.

We drafted a rangy DE in the bottom of the 1st, and we have 2 established starters at that spot (who were also 1st rd picks). If Turner can see the field in rotation and there's no dropoff, I'd say he was a solid pick.

Mel originally thought the 2017 class was decent not good and gave it a B.

Take out "for the Saints" for the reason. This draft class was pretty garbage outside of a handful of elite prospects. Everything else is a bigger than usual crapshoot. If you trust the scouting department and the guys pulling the trigger, then there isn't any reason to be worried the day after the draft is concluded.

This class has potential to be just as bad as our 15 class sans Peat(who sometimes plays terrible)...I think what transpired is we wanted to trade up for a certain group of players ... couldn’t make the trade and just picked whoever... I know it’s more to it than that... but that’s the jest of it though

I was proud of the Saints for not giving up any 2022 draft picks this weekend. It shows those picks are at a premium and this was a big reason why no trades were made.
