What more proof do you need?
1. Terrible attitude
2. Off field issues
3. Commitment to football
4. Terrible pro day

You have no inside information that the rest of the board doesn’t have. These are all assumptions, until released to the public. We do know he had a shoulder injury/surgery, finger injury/surgery, a minor knee injury, and left the program for personal reasons. After all of that, he returned out of shape (probably because of the fact that he had limited movement after surgery) and played earlier than he should have for the team. The 4.85 and 4.87 40s could drop him to the 3rd at minimum, but kid is still a great talent.

Key was a projected top 3 draft pick before the season started. Now he may not be taken until day 3. There are many red flags coming from on and off the field.

Weight issues for one. And then his mysterious 4 month leave of absence from the team. His dad tried to cover it up that he was under pressure as a student athlete, but what it really was is either drug issues or not wanting to commit to football.

Then consider when he finally came back, he wasn't much of a factor anyway. 4 sacks in 8 games with 2 coming in one game.

I graduated from LSU and I am a fan of former players (outside if they play for the Falcons, Bucs, or Panthers) but Key is going to probably be a Day 3 selection and it's all on him as to why.

I have no clue why he left the program but I am sure it had something to do with substance abuse but that is pure speculation. He came back overweight and out of shape but coming off shoulder surgery that happens because your shoulder being immobilized kinda halts any type of conditioning program plus add in that he wasn't at LSU so there's no telling what type of diet he was on. He came back and played way too early and was not in any type of shape to play the amount of snaps he was forced into playing due to the depth issues LSU was facing. If you pop on the tape from the Moo St game and compare it to the Alabama game or any of the later season games you can clearly see he was in better shape, cut down in weight, and had his legs back under him. You understand that the game of football especially as a pass rusher is not always about the sacks. Pressures, hurries, and knock downs are just as important. Key impacted every single game down the stretch.

Has key signed with an agent yet. If not and falls to 4 or 5 he needs to come back

I'd like to see your evidence for any of that.

Provide me with an actual link that says he has off the field issues

Did you miss the part where he missed all of last spring and summer and missed half of fall for an unspecified reason?

If the reason for that absence wasn’t sketchy in some way, I feel like we’d have been given an explanation by now.

The secrecy of his absence is equivalent to the secrecy of Fulton’s suspension and that turned out to be a 2 year ban for messing with a PED test. The fact that Key’s issue was kept even more on lock down tells me it was a big fricking deal.

And as far as Key having such a high ceiling, that potential was based on the idea that Key was a top notch athlete. His pro day numbers suggest that he is not that.

Since this is a Saints board... Daron Payne basically had the same 40 time at the combine. And weighed in at 311 pounds.

All that we know is what’s been put out in the press, I agree that his circumstances this past year have left a bad taste with fans and possibly NFL teams. The problem is why condemn him based on thing we don’t know as fans of the game? If he falls in the draft so be it, but to act like his past is as checkered as Aldon smith or Randy Gregory (like some others have) isn’t really a fair assessment. Guys like those two actually had “red flags” that were obvious to the public.

Mayock said he was great in individual drills. He won’t fall past 2-3 imo

quote:

Mayock says Key's speed doesn't rate as the chief scouting concern about the former Tigers star.

"(Key is) as talented a natural edge rusher as there is in this draft. (He's) 6-foot-5, 238 pounds, he tells me he'll play between 245 and 250. He ran 4.9 at 238 pounds. That's not very good, but it's his quickness in short areas that's really telling.

BUT

quote:

Mayock said on Up To The Minute Wednesday. "The whole key for him is off the field. Man, you got to evaluate him. Remember, Randy Gregory was a first-round talent. He went in the second round and pretty much has disappeared from sight because of off-the-field issues. There are similar concerns about Key. His job is going to be convincing NFL teams you can trust him."

Do you even realize that the Randy Gregory comparisons have come from scouts & that teams will question potential draft picks, families, friends, girlfriends, teachers, teammates, etc for info on players? Hell, they also hire private investigators to background checks as well. So if the scouting world is saying this, there usually is truth to it.

Gregory is a lazy comparison. Dude failed at test AT the combine & a few more at Nebraska. Look it up

No way a team like the Patriots or Saints who need pass rushers let him slide past second or third. His on-fied play will be why.

I guess the scouts are lying & just making things up about Key, right? You were quick to quote Mayock on Key's workout yet you want to discredit his Randy Gregory comparison.

Key has obviously had his indiscretions but not on the level of Gregory.

I guess I’m not simple minded enough to lump every player with off the field concerns in the same categories

You have to be some kind of stupid to fail a combine drug test especially after failing several in college

Have you ever stopped to think the comparison has to do with drug usage & not particularly about failed test or is that too hard for you to understand?

Also have to be some kind of stupid to draft a guy like that before the 4th or 5th round.

Key I will admit is different, but it's not all that dissimilar. It all depends on how teams view the answers he gave and how much they believe him.

It seems split with some saying teams were impressed (seems to come more from Key himself saying that) and others saying teams didn't like the answers.

I wouldn't be shocked if we grabbed him in the third (even though I still don't feel quite comfortable with the fit), but it would be stupid to grab him in the first or to trade up/back into the second for him.

Just seems too much a risk, but we're doing our due diligence.

That was before Key’s the combine and Pro day interviews were scheduled. It was all hearsay and speculation. It carried over afterwards, I’m sure Mayock didn’t have inside information at that time. We’ll see soon enough.
