That was before Key’s the combine and Pro day interviews were scheduled.

How NFL teams are viewing Key, however, is less certain. The edge rusher said that when speaking at the combine, squads were "blown away" by his explanation for a leave of absence which he took from LSU last spring. That can be read for better or worse. Definitely for worse, Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline has been hearing that Key "left a bad taste" with his interviews and that he's been sliding down draft boards.

"You come back to the old question of what will a player do with more time and more money as a pro? Key's background tells you it could be a big problem for him. Not only that, but he had seven sacks over the last two years where he didn't have to beat the tackle." -- NFC Director of Scouting

Sorry LSU fans. The dude was a good sophomore and overhyped. He’s a lean, tall, slow af de/lb.

I hope you’re right. Key in the third or fourth for us would be huge.

You dont have to be a homer to realize he has the potential to be a pro bowl caliber player. It was 1 bad year after a lot of surgery. Im not going to say he’ll see success in the NFL, but he is definitely worth the risk to find out if he can get back to his level of play from sophomore year at 3rd or 4th.

Have you ever stopped to think the comparison has to do with drug usage & not particularly about failed test or is that too hard for you to understand?

Brody, I understand them using the comparison. It's just very basic. Not all cases are the same.

btw Key's DOC was weed, not pills like you were spouting off all offseason.

Key I will admit is different, but it's not all that dissimilar.

Look at you, riding the fence as usual.

Have you seen reports that Key actually failed drug tests at LSU? Cause we know Gregory failed at least 2 at Nebraska.

Did Key give a clean combine sample? By all accounts, yes. Gregory failed drug test AT THE COMBINE. You cannot be any more careless than that.

So much shite has been attached the Key that simply isn't backed up. Head case, doesn't care, druggie. More than anything his shitty athletic testing is what will drop him. The other shite is just a talking point. By all accounts he cleared his name with teams at the combine.

After digging in for some Key information...
quote:

We reached out to two NFL teams that spoke with Key to find out what happened — and we double-checked with a source in Baton Rouge. Key left the program to enter rehab, they said, for marijuana. The feeling we got was that the NFL wasn’t too concerned about that, even though he was briefly suspended after one failed test upon returning to school. The biggest concern, we hear, is that Key — who was not in regular contact with the school for a period of time during his absence — started listening to people outside the program for advice on how he should progress in football. Against the advice of LSU’s team doctors, Key was compelled to have his shoulder operated on. The school’s medical staff had looked at Key’s shoulder, which bothered him for some time, and determined that surgery was not necessary. Key said at the combine that the shoulder “doesn’t give me any problems now” and that he’s good to go. But the timing of it resulted in him missing the early part of the season — and the school was caught off guard by the whole thing at first.

“It’s always concerning when you have [players] going out on their own for medical advice, second opinions, because you don’t always know what people are telling them,” the director said. “You’re going to listen to some other doctor that’s never seen you before because a mentor of yours recommended him? That’s where we have concerns. It’s not the weed or the weight or any of that; that stuff we can deal with.

“The problem is listening to some coach you’ve known forever or some family member getting in their ear and telling them that the [school] doesn’t have their best interests. Look up at New England, that whole mess with Tom Brady and the doctors and that trainer [Alex Guerrero] recruiting guys away from the [Patriots medical staff] … teams worry about that. They want to know everything that’s done to their players.”

The LSU source confirmed the timeline and concern about outside influences. The source also added that Key was “completely, madly, wildly out of shape” upon returning — he first played against Mississippi State — but worked his way into form by the Florida game. LSU lost to Alabama later in the season but Key “played his arse off” in the game, the team source said.

What’s wrong with this opinion?

Key had a great sophomore year then basically quit. Whatever happened raised all kinds of red flags and when he came back he was only average. Then this offseason, he did himself no favors.

Any GM that takes him on the first 2 rounds is a fool

I can see Arden Key having a similar career path to Sam Montgomery

Y’all are overthinking this. His 2017 game tape matches up nicely with his combine and pro day numbers - average to below average. That is who he is now. 2016 Arden Key is not in this draft.

Key has obviously had his indiscretions but not on the level of Gregory.

I guess I’m not simple minded enough to lump every player with off the field concerns in the same categories

You have to be some kind of stupid to fail a combine drug test especially after failing several in college

Gregory was insanely immature and dumb. He failed a test at the combine, was habitually late during visits, and interviewed very poorly. However, Gregory also tested a lot better than Key. I think how he went about treating his shoulder injury combined with the extremely poor 40 time is going to weigh more on Key than the marijuana concerns.

I saw him in mid-July, in person. Yes he's tall, but I was expecting to see muscles popping out everywhere and this wasn't the case. At all. He looked like an average dude. My eyes told me, this guy isn't in shape.

Then word comes out that he's not in game shape, which was somewhere during fall camp or right at the beginning of the season.

We kept waiting for him to come around, but... he didn't really have much of an impact last year.

Then his combine and pro-day numbers come out.

Teams invest 1st and 2nd round picks on impact players, players they feel can come in and start right away. A 1st or 2nd round pick is one of the best players on their team. Was Key one of LSU's best players last year? Nope!

I can't understand why people are so surprised by the thought of Key going in the 3rd round, or even later.

It’s purely based on his natural talent for rushing the passer. The moment Oregeron saw Key’s abilities he called him a player. When the guy wasn’t in post surgery condition, he earned his All-American awards.

Does the name Ryan Leaf ring any bells? Being labeled a head case unfortunately puts Key in a shitty group , one that may be hard to get away from. The NFL has a way of separating the people who give all, and the other group trying to skate on sheer physical ability. I hope for his sake he is willing to give his best, on every play.
