Jeff Ireland on the Saints podcast said they basically were planning on just targeting him as a udfa but his agent went quiet on them and a team in our division seemed to have him locked up, so they said F it we will just draft him,

Couldn't beat out Garret Shrader this year. I get payton is a QB whisperer, but this guy wasn't very good. and got hurt a lot.

The Saints didn’t get him to play QB.

As was said on draft day, its likely they see him as a Taysom replacement.

He's 6'4" 250 and ran a 4.49. They had him run routes and then send them video of it in the pre-draft process.

They see him as a project "Athlete".

Sounds like another excuse for trading all their 3rd day picks away and then trading back in

The saints literally made him run routes and send the tape to us. He's going to be the next Hill.

Can he do enough to make the roster though?

Sure there's the practice squad, but once we cut him that other team can sign him if they want. Maybe they won't be interested because he didn't go through camp with them...but who knows.

Payton has been known to stash a guy on the active roster.

he better play ST to maybe earn a 53 roster spot w/ a full slate of qb's already on deck.

I think he’s headed to practice squad, UNLESS he gets the nod as a special teams guy

You left out the most interesting part of this story.
- Joe Brady spent two years as a graduate assistant at Penn State from 2015 to 2016
- Tommy's first year at Penn State was 2015
- Joe and Tommy know each other very well
- Conjecture: Joe Brady created the Taysom role with Saints based on his experience with Tommy at Penn State.

I've been jokingly saying that the Saints confused him with Nick Fitzgerald who, without question, looked like a better athlete on the field at Mississippi State.

If Stevens makes this team and contributes anywhere near the level of Taysom Hill, this draft story will be epic.

Or did a division rival make us trade a 6th rounder just to frick us over?

Correct me if i'm wrong but if we put him on the PS that said team can sign him to their active roster correct?
