If we agree to this, then we need new management. I'd let Sean waste away for another 2 years.

Gruden went for 2 1st rounders, 2 second rounders, and 8 million in cash.

Payton has done a lot more than Gruden did at the time of Gruden's trade.

Payton idling for a season does muck things up though.

I wonder how much Gayle actually understands how shitty that would be

You're right LC.

I guess my take is I'd rather hold Payton hostage than Payton holding Saints hostage, if you get my meaning. I appreciate what Sean did here, but if it's let's say pick #23 (random), then I'm a hard no. I've said before, Saints have a history of suck. I'd rather stand on my morals than trade Payton for peanuts.

Nah I’d rather have draft picks to help rebuild than be petty and let him walk for nothing.

Also the “but Gruden got this…”, that shite was over 20 years ago. It doesn’t apply to today’s NFL

I hear that too and I am being petty.

I don’t know if it’s going to make a difference though.

I still say we should ask for

2023 2nd round
2024 1st round

I want two picks in 2024 to be able to move up. Say the Saints pick 14th and they have the 23rd, they might still have to throw in a 3rd or 4th to move up to 5,6 or 7 to grab the 2nd or 3rd QB in the draft.

That's the thing. People don't realize how different 20 years ago was.

Picks were not as valuable as they are now... Cost controlled is everything

Same here. He doesn’t get to dictate the compensation. I’d let him sit out of spite.

You would rather be petty and get nothing?

Makes no sense

Sean hasn’t dictated anything. He was asked what he thought the comp for him would be. He answered. He’s clearly been told. It’s probably a factor for him choosing the team…what will they have left after the trade.

It’s been pretty clear based on media reporting that the Saints said their price for Sean was a first and change.

Its not being petty its getting compensated properly for an asset.

If anyone was petty in all of this it was payton. He signed a contract extension and left the saints in the middle of it. Now he wants to come back and be released from his obligation to compete against the saints.

As opposed to getting no compensation when he walks? Are you hearing yourself? Would you rather have a mid first round pick or no pick?

Id rather have payton sit than get ripped in a trade.

Yeah, that’s petty. I’d rather have a decent package than end up with nothing. This team needs assets. We need picks, young cheap talented players, and future capital.

If we were talking like, a 4th rounder? Sure, sit his arse. A mid first though? No shot I turn that down.

A million years ago. That's not the market anymore

Yup. At least sit yet another year. He has what, 2-3 more to go?

Might even be better to do it the following season.

I just do not get caving into Payton here. His services should command multiple firsts or a high first. Not mid to late first trash or whatever he said. It's absurd he would even say such a thing.

How often does the market have a coach of Payton's caliber up for trade? I'm guessing almost never.

Payton was the most winningest coach outside of Bill Belichick up until he had to sit for Bounty Gate crap. Then after that still a top 5 coach in the NFL.

I just don't understand how multiple high draft picks is frowned upon when it comes to a proven coach like Payton.

What would us Saints have given for Payton back in 2006?

How much worse would we have been without Bush and Meachem? Our consecutive two firsts. And I actually like Bush. I think he was very important. Free agency can be a game changing. Having a QB is also a game changer with a QB friendly HC. Some of these teams already have QB and the ones that don't would easily be the favorites for top free agent QBs under Payton.

How can a draft pick or two be considered more valuable than a proven elite head coach? Unless you are looking at drafting a franchise QB then I don't get it.

It's funny how all these fan bases get excited outside of their mind at the idea of Payton being their coach, but then they act like he isn't worth high picks. I think the two best coaches in the NFL moving forward right now would be Andy Reid and Sean Payton.

You’re acting like we have all this leverage.

If we “play hard ball” like y’all want to, we end up with nothing. Sean is only contracted for 2 more seasons, 2023 and 2024. If we wait until next offseason, he will be worth significantly less. And obviously if we wait after that, he walks and signs elsewhere for free.

We have to take what we can get. Yeah, I’d love to have a massive bounty of picks for him. But if what teams are discussing is a first and change, and our options are to take that or RECEIVE NOTHING AT ALL WHEN HE WALKS, I’m taking the first and change.
