Some of y'all want to talk about being petty, but Payton quit on this team that he built with his poor choices to try and get on a better team with more flexibility.

He was a coward and should be held accountable. Get a great return, or hold him into perpetuity. I know that happens with rights for a player for x-number of years and that's with them not signing a contract. This guy signed the contract.

In the end, if it is not a high first (top 10), then it can be multiple picks with a mid- to late-first grade.

In the end, Saints do hold the leverage.

If they willingly went under contract, you aren't forcing him to work, but he cannot work in the NFL until he meets that obligation.

This slavery comparison is ridiculous seeing as slavery is not a choice.

1) Payton can choose to fulfill the contract
2) Come to terms on a buyout
3) Come to an agreement that is fair to the Saints to compensate him breaching the contract and working elsewhere
4) Stay retired

It is amazing to me that some of you think the Saints have to be held accountable if they choose to move on, but Payton does not?

I am also not thinking they should get a top 3 pick for this, but #12 plus some filler like one of their 3rds makes sense.

Arizona's 2nd rounder this year and first next year (considered equivalent to a 2nd in this draft) would be reasonable.

Texan's 2nd rounder this year and the better of the Houston/Cleveland 1st next year is also an option that would be reasonable.

They aren't getting 2 firsts and 2 seconds, and anyone thinking that is stupid.

It would go to arbitration and the arbitrator would determine Sean’s trade value if any. It wouldn’t go to court since his contract almost certainly has an arbitration clause.

Plenty of contracts roll over if someone takes time away to protect the employer. Hell, this should be the standard to stop coaches from using it as an out.

Exactly. Compensation has to be high enough to discourage coaches from “needing a break” and wanting to coach the same year they “needed a break” like payton. I dont believe a “mid to late” first rounder is enough to discourage that. Heck, miami had no problem tampering with payton and brady and lost multiple picks for it.
