Big time.
Thanks for the memories, coach, but I really hope your stint in Denver goes as well as the Russell Wilson trade.

Payton won't fail. He will struggle I think until he can upgrade Wilson though.
Guess it depends on what you consider failure vs struggling. I think he will have them fighting for a WC spot most years he is there. However, I think that will be considered a failure in the eyes of the fans/team as they will want to take that division. IMO, his success will be defined by his ability to replace Wilson. Does he keep rotating through vets that are either proven, or at least been around the league long enough to show they are not incapable. Or can he finally develop that rookie QB as the successor as we were hoping he would do here.

Payton probably frustrated and realizes Wilson sucks and they mortgaged the future to get him and now he's stuck with him.
Plus their WR room is getting decimated and it wasn't very good to begin with when he has to bring in Calloway and Lil'Jordan. His whole offense is predicated on the WR's and he realizes he's nowhere close to having what he needs to run the offense.
It's a total rebuild in Denver and I can see the Broncos defense regressing as well as the Saints had some pretty bad defenses at times during the Payton era.

I like that Payton spoke so candidly. I think sports need a little more of this. He gave specifics ( ie delay of games, etc) for his opinion. I get so bored with coach speak and fluff. I think there is a balance between giving a critical opinion and sportsmanship. Payton probably crossed the line by saying it was the worst coaching job but if he would have just said “ I think the coaching was below average for this team last year. It wasted a year for some talented players” that would have been better stayed.
I’m not anti-DA, but I would rather hear an interview w Sean anytime over boring, coach speak DA.

You act as if this is no big deal
So now he has the top brass in the NFL “not liking him”
Now he has every Coach in the NFL “not liking him”

It was the first interesting thing Payton's had to say since he took the TV gig for his fake retirement. If the guy actually said stuff like that as an analyst, he would have actually been entertaining.

Nothing Sean does is off the cuff. He’s a very calculating person to go with his ego. He knew what he was doing by passing the blame off because turning Denver around in year 1 might not happen like it did in 2006 with the Saints. Wilson is not half of Drew Brees.

Everyone knew Denver wasn’t going to be a turnaround in year 1,
That was welcomed, 2005 was such a nightmare.

It was dumb to say it all to a reporter. He’s getting his just desserts.

I'm just not sure why anyone cares about Sean Payton and Nathaniel Hackett. I wish more people spoke their mind. It's more entertaining than the same generic answers to the same generic questions.

This. Why are people acting like it's suddenly uncouth for coaches and athletes to criticize one-another. I seriously don't understand the pearl-clutching.

That’s why I wanted the 2024 first round pick instead of 2023. It would have been a much better pick.
Might have been a higher pick, but not necessarily a better pick. I know it’s early, but Breese is pretty exciting and appears to be well on his way to playing above where he was taken.

We about to find out if it was always just Drew Fricking Brees.
I think it was. Or Jameis was just that damn bad.
