How can the Saints eve make the Watson trade work?

Right now you have to have $35 million in space to get him in a trade. Even if the Saints trade them Davenport and Roby, that’s only about $18 million in cap space saved with them currently $6+ over the cap as it is.
ThAt still leaves you $23 million short of the space needed and would leave you with no caption as it is without reworking a contract for Watson and maybe some others.
Armstead is hitting $12+ million in dead money from his void year, so maybe recoup a few million there if you resign him, but I just don’t see how you are going to do it with this team and even more so moving forward without like my 3 or 4 day 1/2 picks in the next couple of years for cheap talent.

seriously... have we not watched Loomis cook numbers for the last like 15 years?
how do people not see this yet?

And, it has already been reported that the Saints and another team (maybe Carolina) were reaching out with his agent about reworking his contract. Since his contract bonus would be absorbed by Houston, they could agree to turn $30M into a signing bonus so his 2022 salary is only $5M. You then spread the $30M over 5 years ($6M per year) to reduce the cap hit to $11M. And, if he is suspended by the NFL his loss salary would be substantially less $295k a game v $2M a game.

They will re-work his contract to make it fit. Not the biggest issue related to this.

Doesn't work this way. Unless Houston makes the reworked contract, the Saints have to have $35 million in space to bring him in. Yes, after the fact they can rework it to open up space, but that will still be post trade. They will have to make some serious adjustments before hand to get him in.

Houston would re work the contract before the trade takes place.

Could have sworn I saw a situation where a team had the restructured contract in place at the time of the trade and sent it into the league office. Maybe that team was already under the cap w/o the restructure. Either way, I am sure Loomis can clear $40M pretty quick:
Playing around on OTC real quick:
Cut Roby saves $9.5M (or extend saves $7M)
Trade Davenport clears $8.5M
Designated MJenkins post 6/01 cut saves $7.8M
Restructure Taysom saves $7.3M
Extend Demario saves $5M
Extend Oneymata saves $6M (trade saves $3.8M)
Bringing in a guy like Watson will get some guys eager to work with the team and move money around; as long as they still get the money, not everyone will take less

If it does/doesn't work, it won't be because of cap space. We are obviously interested in the deal and they wouldn't be if they thought they couldn't get under the cap.
One bonus is the trade partner is Houston. I like our chances of being on the good side of the deal, while Houston thinking they got the best deal.

because they wont need the money to pay the draft picks they give up or the players they include in the trade.
one thing is certain, teams have already agreed to the deals, made, at this point its just where watson wants to go is all that is being decided now.
there may have even been some talk of buying out some of our players contracts to remove them from our cap if included in the trade. there are lots of ways just about any team can make this deal work as long as they have draft picks and very desired franchise level players to make part of the deal
not saying they should, but just with 2 players, if kamara and MT are part of the trade and houston agrees to fully buy out their contracts in full, that covers all the money you need to sign watson
