Oh you poor, poor thing. You must be someone else who thinks Carr is a fricking top 3 quarterback in the NFC.

Don’t worry I get it….when I was a child, I thought everyone who wore a saints jersey was the GOAT as well. I had the same arguments with other children on this board when we brought in Winston. Most of them grew up……most.

Jesus. You people are idiots. He’s essentially working with a 2 yr / $70 million guaranteed contract. 3yr / $100 million as long as he stays healthy and on the roster. The 4th year and the additional $50 million is a fugazi. It’s not guaranteed and it will never be paid bc he will either be cut or restructured long before then

Exactly, and I get all downvotes for pointing it out b/c idiots on here don’t know math lol or don’t know the contract details.

They don’t want to know the details. It wouldn’t fuel their complaining.

Now go check Carr's 2022 stats vs Dalton.

2023 - $35 mil
2024 - $35 mil
2025 - $30 mil.

That’s all that matters then. Salary cap only cares about how much he makes that year…..not averaged out over time.

yall are way too worried about the cap. they'll just kick the can, restructure, and backload like they always do. By the time your tampon dries, the team cap will have gone up and we "survive" this signing without losing anyone we really wanted to keep.

You dont get to bitch about the QB position for 2 years, then complain when the team addresses the situation in the only realistic way it could.

It keeps working because we keep having cut and restructure. Restructuring only delays the inevitable while not being able to afford actual quality people. I saw someone posted that were projected to be $84 million over cal in 2024 and that’s including the projected cap increase. We have aging stars on the team and we can’t afford to offload them before they lose any value they might have.

Sure I do. Because I don’t believe it’s the ONLY realistic way they could. It was the only way they could because they just felt the need to do SOMETHING and made a panic move.

We could have absolutely used that money elsewhere.

False. The salary cap LOVES a good averaging out. Signing bonuses get averaged out over the life of the contract. Carr’s contract has a 4th year that’s a fugazi and a 5th year that’s voidable specifically to be able to average out the signing bonus an additional two years.

We are over the cap, so there really is no "that money". That implies that they have a plan to soften the cap implications over time. As far as other options, what are they? The QB draft class is arse from top to bottom and it doesnt get much better next year. There is no one worth tanking for. Dalton isnt the answer and re-upping with Jamies will cost millions in wasted cap space. On the flip side, the departure of Brady leaves the division ripe right now, so from that perspective, the Saints will be the favorites to win the South and earn a playoff berth. As long as the FO can manage the cap implications, signing Carr is almost inarguably the best football move available.

When we get to 2026, will his contract details retroactively affect our 2023 salary cap. Yes or no.

Because in general Saints fans are too much up in their feels about everything. Everything is the end of the world for them.

If NFL fan bases were issued mascots the Saints would be Eeyore.

That is included when saying "use the money elsewhere". Elsewhere being in our fricking pockets.

But Carr is the answer?

I bolded the part that is purely your opinion. There are a number of other moves. Dalton would have likely had the same contract that we gave Winston($12-13mil). Cut Winston in June and it saves us $4-5 mil. Sign a different backup for $3-4 or try your luck with drafting Hooker.

There...that just saved us over $20 million this season.

Unless you think Carr is "the answer". Because if you don't, he's still just a holdover QB that costs us a hell of a lot more than what we already have with not much of an improvement.

I have no idea what point you are trying to make here. Obviously a point in time 3 years away will not affect this years cap. The point is that he has no contract details for 2026 because you are a lunatic if you think the saints are paying Derek Carr $50 million for one season

Really only hurts is clear and above better. The rest are pretty meh. And that’s not to pump Carr but more of an indictment on the NFC QB situation.

Why do you care more about the cap situation than winning though? Because that's what you are selling... no QB play and losing the weakest division in the NFL. We arent winning shite with Andy Dalton. Of the teams with the best cap numbers rolling into the season, most of them suck arse. And even if we didnt sign Carr, we werent going to be much under the cap anyway. Carr actually gives the FO some additional leverage to restructure other contracts. They didnt sign the guy without a plan to pay for it. Its stupid to think otherwise.

Just relax and enjoy the season, and stop pretending that anyone on earth requires your concern over the salary cap situation in New Orleans.

It’s very simple. I want to play for a Super Bowl. There’s nothing about Carr on this team that makes me think we’ll get anywhere close to it. We’re saddling ourselves with a hefty contract for the next few seasons when there might be a better opportunity that comes along

We are paying heavily for a moderately better Dalton.

Ah. So only your opinion matters. Got it.

But your point doesn’t make any sense. The goal is to make the most competitive team each season and fit it within the confines of the cap for that season. So who cares about the 2026 or 2027 or 2058 cap situation? When we get to those seasons, we will restructure and “create” as much cap space as we need. That’s the way the league works now.

This looks like a really good deal Loomis worked for the organization. The signing gives the current team a legitimate QB that if coached properly should succeed. If not coaches properly, as in the team does not perform as expected, then the organization has flexibility in the near future to go in a different direction in staff change and QB change.

The team is going to have to pay that salary anyway so it's definitely team friendly.
