Versus 4th down and 2. Turned out to poor decision. Did he make it because he believed they would go for it?

I'm sure he did. I thought they would, but then they were gonna kick on inches to go before the challenge

I thought it was a bad call for multiple reasons. At that point we were playing crappy defense, so wasn’t feeling great they wouldn’t pick it up. Also pushing them back there, even if we stop them it’s still less than a 40 yard FG. No real benefit to taking it there in my opinion.

I actually agree with the decision.

I thought DA would decline so Bears would go FG. Defense was not good today.

Defense forced 5 turnovers and gave up 17 pts. GTFO with that statement.

Defense was not good in the 1st half, you mean? The D was awesome in 2H. I believe the Bears didn’t cross mid field in the 2nd and we forced 4 TO’s. Halftime adjustments were on point and that may have been the best half of defensive play the Saints have ever played.

Doesn't matter. Saints stop it, its Saints ball.

When he took the penalty and if they don't convert the 3rd down then its 4th and ten they kick the field goal. If it 4th and 1 or 2 they go for it or kick the field goal.

We gave them another shot to convert on third down and they converted. The Saints are now on their heels and Chicago got an easy TD. It was dumb

Bears would have absolutely gone for it on 4th and 2 and probably gotten it. I agree that you push them back, hope to hold them and force a FG.

They would not have gone for it. That was made obvious later when they sent to FG unit on when they thought they did not get the 1st down a play later after the penalty.

Maybe. But there's value in the opportunity to turn them away with zero points if they do try and go or it. Plus, even if they convert, they still may end up kicking a FG.

I thought that was a bad call that had very little upside and a lot of downside.

It was a terrible decision.

The NFL is all about getting stops on Defense. So in lieu of a guaranteed stop situation via 4th down try or FG attempt you decided to give them another opportunity. Opportunities are what you trying to eliminate and he voluntarily gave them one.

While true, that really shouldn't play into the decision because you never know the answer to that.

I don't know why you wouldn't take a 4th and 2 in that situation with the opportunity to hold them with no points. You have the dome behind you. You can take some chances with the play call if you want.

I was coming to post that. Hindsight is 20/20. At the time of accepting the penalty, he did not have the benefit of knowing what Eberfluss would decide to do with the 4th and 2.

Personally, I probably would have declined the penalty, but I think either decision was a dice roll and each could be defended at the time (or criticized after the fact). 3rd and 12 at that part of the field should have been pretty good odds at getting a stop, or at least force 4th and longer-than-2. DA has made far worse decisions than this one.

ETA: at the time, the Bears were carving up the defense, and they're a team with nothing to lose, so I personally fully expected them to go for it on 4th and 2 and didn't have much faith we'd stop it considering the way the D was playing at that time.

If it’s 4th and inches or 4th and one, I could possibly see it. Or if it potentially knocks a team out of fg range. Neither apply here. I posted during the game it was an idiotic call before they got the first. Allen is a bad coach.

If it weren't for the turnovers that score would be much higher. Defense was not good, but it was highly opportunistic. Watching Chicago march the field at will is not the makings of a good defensive day. The turnovers, however, are.

Yes. He said in his post game press conference that he thought they would go for it on 4th and short and wanted to back them up. Not a terrible decision unless you had no confidence that your defence could get off the field on 3rd and 12.

I would have accepted it too since the Bears probably would have went for it. The thought process is to back them up and hopefully your defense can get a stop.

while its understandable to look back on it now and second guess, that was a reasonable decision to back them up.

the real issue is not going up by 2 scores when it was gifted to you and you make sure the odds of you losing go up drastically, and thats what DA thought was a good strategy, to make it as easy as possible for the other team to win.

I thought it was a no brainer to decline the penalty.

I guess that's why DA makes the big bux and I am just a spare fan.
