tldr: Payton admits he was enamored with Mahomes during the pre-draft process. Called him the best college QB he ever scouted. The most interesting portion of the article is that he tried to keep it a secret among his own staff that he wanted to draft Mahomes. He even met with Mahomes in private. It somehow slipped and that’s why he believed the Chiefs traded up ahead of us and took Mahomes.

Wasn’t there a golfer in the war room that year that also said in an interview afterwards that Payton and the Saints really loved Mahomes?

I thought there was a story that Mahomes tipped the chiefs because he didn’t want to play in New Orleans

Seems odd given that the Saints were one of the better franchises at the time, CSP is a reputable offensive coach, and New Orleans is a good place to live if you're crazy rich.

There is an interview out there of mahomes admitting this

He didn’t say he didn’t want to play for the saints. He just mentioned he really wanted to play for the chiefs so he called and said if y’all don’t trade up for me the saints are going to take him

He thought he would have to sit behind Brees for several years.

I think it was more about the teams that drafted right behind us. The Chiefs came out of nowhere to get him, but I recall he was linked to several of the teams picking in the teens.

Payton was always enamored with stud QBs and yet drafted those like Grayson, Canfield, and Book.

Sean Payton is so full of shite. If he had any idea mahomes would be half as good as he is, he would've sold his life away to draft him as high as possible.

So no one can vouch for his story. How convenient.

This. He definitely liked Mahomes. He said it on draft night. But there was no indication at the time that he would have taken Mahomes over Lattimore. They had no idea Latt would fall to there.

In some other timeline, we drafted Mahomes, Brees won #2 and walked off the stage to be with his kids. Saints celebrating #5 today tying those dogshit Cowboys.

Y’all wanted Brees arm which was deteriorating . He even admitted it.

Notice how the Packers know when it is time to move on.

He’s full of shite. Didn’t he say the same thing about Lamar Jackson? The only QB he hit on was already a pro bowler by the time he landed in New Orleans.

In an interview from Mahomes a few years back, he admitted to calling the Chiefs (may have been Andy) because he had just heard from the Saints, and they said they would be taking him at 11. He wanted to go to KC because he liked the system, the coaches and knew he would have an opportunity to start much sooner.

The interesting "what if" is apparently SF didn't even interview Mahomes because they thought they were going to land a trade for Cousins. Imagine the shitshow the NFC would be right now if Kyle actually drafted Mahomes instead of Solomon Thomas?

All he had to do is trade up

Biggest frick up in Saints history

P.S.

Andy Reid makes Payton look like a high school coach

shite, all he had to do was not become a giddy high school girl and wait for the 10th pick to be made. If he doesn't call Mahomes and tip his hat, Mahomes may not call KC and let them know he's about to be drafted.

Buffalo was taking Lattimore at 10 if they didn't trade back with KC. That's why they took Tre White at 27 with the Bills pick. They had Lattimore & White rated near the same.

Very. Tells me that he was more self aware than he was given credit for.

Also tells me that he knew how hard he was running his coaches and guys. Understood that some folks in his own camp would do things to hurt him because he ran his coaches and guys hard the way he did.

Not saying he was wrong in anything but I think it goes to show that a successful a-hole is only that way if he is completely honest with themself and completely self aware.
