Not true. The story was that he told the Chiefs that if they wanted him, they would have to get above 12 as he felt he would be gone by 12. There was nothing at all about not wanting to play for the Saints.

Reminds me of when Saban said he really wanted Drew Brees over Culpepper

Payton was blabbing it all during the Senior Bowl and workouts. He didn't keep jack shite to the vest. He fell in love and told everyone. Moron.

NO had the most prolific offense in the NFL at the time, why would he want to go to the Chiefs over the Saints?

Yeah, this is actually stupid. This is like me saying, man I almost invested $5,000 in google or apple (Lamar or Mahomes) way back when they were only worth a couple million. You either did it or you didn’t. You don’t get credit for almost doing it like Payton wants credit for

Seems odd given that the Saints were one of the better franchises at the time, CSP is a reputable offensive coach, and New Orleans is a good place to live if you're crazy rich.

You were on to something until the very end.

We were coming off all those 7-9 seasons with trash defenses.

A guy who trades up to take running backs wouldn’t trade up for “ the best college QB he ever scouted”, this sounds like 20/20 hindsight by Payton

Buffalo was taking Lattimore at 10 if they didn't trade back with KC. That's why they took Tre White at 27 with the Bills pick. They had Lattimore & White rated near the same.

The “proof” you need of the Saints desire to take Mahomes was the fact KC, coming off a 12-4 season with Alex Smith, traded all the way up from 27 to jump in front of the Saints. The ONLY other reason it makes sense as to why KC made such a bold move is because they wanted to jump in front of Houston at 12…who was taking a QB…and wound up drafting Watson.

Was it a 100% certainty the Saints were going to draft Mahomes? Only a few people really know that. But there was enough “smoke” for KC to make what may be one of the best draft day trades in history

Exactly. frick that arrogant prick. You don't let the pick come to you if that's who you want and we all know this dipshit likes to jump up to take injured DEs from small schools.

As bad as this was for the Saints, the Bills screwed up even worse. Had they not let Mahomes get in the AFC they probably have a couple Super Bowl appearances.

Payton is just saying that about mahommes because he is trying to make sure people keep calling him this offensive guru.

Nobody in hell was trading 2 first for davenport but his arse.

Payton rode drew as long as he could, failed with jameis and " felt it was time" to step away while he still had this mystique about him
