My first memories of Saints football as a kid were during the Ditka years. At one point we had two quarterbacks named Billy Joe on the roster. Our leading rusher one year was a guy with a skin disease. Keith Poole was the man, especially that time he nearly got decapitated vs the Niners. I remember being one pissed off 9-year-old walking out of the Superdome after watching the Browns win their first game as an expansion team on a Hail Mary. I used to get teased at school, in New Orleans, for wearing a Saints Starter jacket.
2000 was an awesome year. I went to my Rams playoff game with my dad and uncle. We ate lamb chops at Ditka's before the game, then after lunch we drove up to Immaculate Conception to light some candles. Walked right in the middle of a wedding. Obviously some poor bastard planned a wedding that weekend not expecting the Saints to be hosting a playoff game
Even though we got smacked by the Vikings the next week, we didn't care, we were just so happy we won a playoff game. I still think Hakim dropping the ball is the loudest moment I've ever heard at a sporting event. Louder than the Gleason block or the NFC Championship kick.

the 2000 season was cool because the games I caught the previous year where so miserable.
I went to the Titans and Browns games in '99. The Titans game was kind of funny because Ditka flipped off the crowd.
but the Browns game was the worst. The hail mary at the end, barf.
I actually have pretty good luck when I go the to the games. We've won more than we've lost when I go so that year sucked. But to be fair we only won like 3 games anyway.
but in 2000, I went to the 49ers game and that was really the first time where we just lined up to a man and just kicked their arse. It was awesome. We sacked Garcia all day long and I want to say we were winning like 21-0 or 28-0 at halftime.
I also went to the Falcons game that year and Sammy Knight ran a interception back for a TD. I want to say we sacked ATL a bunch in that game too. The Who Let The Dogs Out song was on repeat all year it seemed like

I enjoyed your story Chilly, good stuff, especially the wedding. Hilarious.
I watched the game in a bar in New York city and emailed pictures of me standing in front of a big screen TV with the final score to all my relatives in NOLA and then called my cousin in New Iberia from a Times Square payphone and screamed at him for 20 minutes. Good times.

As someone who was at both events, I would have to take exception with this statement.
The Rams game was straight-up joy and relief, the 2006 game was a wild mixture of noise, feelings and emotions.

I didn't know that. I didn't become a fan until sometime late in the 2009 season

That was definitely the season that ultimately started to put us to respectability.. Humble times lol.. Brooks doesn't get the appreciation he should've gotten for that brief stretch.. He was our first consistent QB that had a gun to spread them out. Mike McCarthy could've done a better job after seeing what he has done with Rogers. All in All for true Saints fans this was a very enjoyable year.

Most posters on here have been fans their entire lives. Some of my very first memories of watching TV, were of watching Saints games.

Fan since 83', first game in the Dome was 93', season ticket holder since 99'.
The 2000 season was such a great time. The Ditka era was one of the most disappointing, from an expectations, level. He brought none of the fire he was know for and actually treated the job like an inconvenience to his golfing and restaurant ownership.
The game had passed him by and we were stuck with three seasons of painful regression.
2000 was the epitome of "cleaning house" - new coaches, new GM, tons of new players and it all came together rather quickly.
That one season erased the stale stink of the Ditka/Kurharich era and regardless of what the prevailing opinion of Brooks is, he came into a tough situation (replacing an injured veteran who was just hitting his stride) and he took us to the playoffs and an improbable win against the defending champs.
It was a great season and one of the fondest memories of my time as a fan.

I don't think Jeff Blake gets enough credit for that year, I mean he started the 6 game winning streak and I think he broke his foot in the last game of that win streak.

My saints fan OG moment was my first game I've ever attended. It was the game when Jeff Blake got hurt and Haslett had to choose either Aaron Brooks or Jake Delhomme to replace him.
Rest is history.

This may be my favorite Henderson call -- as great as "Pigs have flown" is, it was obviously prepared.
Absolutely. It isn't the best moment in Saints history, but it's the best call because it was so unexpected and he nailed it, voice cracking and everything. Having Henderson to appreciate actually makes me irritated with Jim Hawthorne even more.

quote:I remember it clearly. Of course, I'm getting to be an older guy, I was 12 the year we all had hope and finished 1-15 (that was '80, and the Saints had finished 8-8 the year before. Offense was wicked good, with Manning at QB, Muncie at TB, Chandler and Galbreath catching everything). That hurt, although by midseason it was numbing and almost funny how bad things were.
Do you remember those days? How many posters on here were Saints fans from that time and before?
I remember 83 (I think that was the season), too- I think I was physically sick the entire spring after the Saints blew a shot at the playoffs. Final game of the season, vs the Rams, if Saints win they go 9-7 and host the wildcard. Had the lead very late, Rams trying to drive for a winning FG, Vince Ferragamo throws the ball down the middle of the field. Johnnie Poe (Saints safety) stands there like he's a punt returner about to call a fair catch, ball hits him in the chest... he drops it. Rams hit the next pass to get into range, win on FG at the end, Saints out, Cowboys to playoffs. I cried, I broke about every Star Wars diecast collectable in my room, seriously considered atheism, etc.
I remember learning that old football players decline- we had Bum Phillips, he traded for Earl Campbell (a legendary RB), and early on, Campbell broke off a long run... and fumbled without being hit, ball went through the endzone for a touchback. We were cursed.
Remember the miraculous strike season of 87, the Pope had come to the Superdome that year (and BROKE THE CURSE!!!
But we never won a playoff game.
Beating the Rams in 2000 was such an incredible experience, not only because it was our 1st playoff win, but because they were the defending Super Bowl champs and The Greatest Show on Turf with Kurt Warner. They had absolutely mauled us the year before. And best of all, it was because it was the stinking Rams.

We went to that game we had season tickets that year. What a great game and also knowing that I will always be part of that history. We stayed at the Hyatt that night and when I tell you it was a party it was unreal. It took and hour to get from the dome to the Hyatt.

i was pretty bummed when he got hurt against the Raiders. He threw a good deep ball.
I remember he threw a bomb to Joe Horn vs. the Bears that year after we had run Ricky Williams most of that game.
Horn was so wide open. Hit'em with a flea flicker or a play action pass I think

You're right, he really doesn't get enough credit. He was on fire during that streak and was really starting to gain a command of Mike McCarthy's "Gulfcoast" offense.
As a "journey-man" he was unfortunately, unceremoniously dumped for Brooks in 2001 because there was no way, following the potential of his 2000 season that you could dump Brooks on the bench. I often wonder how much different 2001 could have been if Blake was given an honest chance to play.
I'll never forget when he got injured. We were running late to the Dome that morning, we fought traffic and a late-arriving crowd. I was working my way to my seat and had just started up the stairs when Blake rolled out and got horse-collared -- The Dome got completely silent and you just knew it was bad.
