There's not many NBA owners that can afford to lose millions in a season
The actually can.
This isn't the NBA of 20 years ago. Nearly all the owners make most of their money outside of basketball.
I'm well aware of what net worth means.
The cost of wages for those workers over the next 30 days is probably less than a million dollars (probably much less). Gayle, along with the rest of the owners. Could have and should have come out with a statement within 24 hours of the suspension to say the details would be worked out but to not worry, they will be taken care of and they will not have to miss rent because of this stoppage.

The also have a clause in the CBA specifically for pandemics. Suspending the season suggests they hopefully won't have to go there, but if they wanted to not pay the players, they could.

Don’t you get it Johnny, we have to think of the well being of the billionaires, if they pay out a few million, they might only be billionaires still. It’s truly unconscionable

To be fair, Kushner says they actually were working on it when Zion stepped in and said "Let me make this easy for you."

Based on my limited knowledge —
The Pels were in discussions with the vendor (who controls salaries) but were dealing w an unknown timetable of NBA suspension, contracts, etc...so it wasn’t yet completed.
Then Zion just offered on his own to step in and handle 30 days of it.

If it honestly was a priority, here’s how that discussion goes: “alright, what’s the employee count and individual pay rates, let me know where to wire the money and I’ll have the lawyers over to confirm the details.”
Press release: we are doing our best to expedite the process to ensure all employees of the arena do not suffer economic hardship due to this ongoing pandemic.

It took their superstar breaking radio silence about an ongoing conversation to actually get the Pelicans to address the issue
The Pels ownership could have already had this all in the works and planned to do it without making a statement about it.

If Zion can step in, so could have Gayle. Save the bullshite about just being a tenant. Good for Zion. Shame on you Gayle

For reference I manage a chunk of a large scale mid-west project that currently employs 1500 direct workers and nearly 1000 indirect workers. 200 office staff and a number of contracted labor.
We are freezing the project for all non site essential personnel to comply with internal decisions around the ongoing Corona pandemic.
Despite contractual obligations we understood both the necessity and the hardship at risk for taking actions without thinking of the employees well being. So in less than 48 hours we made the decision to cover the expenses of employees while still negotiating reimbursement schedules and allotments with the client. And while we are a profitable and strong business, we don’t have an owner with pockets as deep as Bensons.
If you wanted to make this happen, and this goes with other teams as well, you could have been out in front and already had results to show when Zion made his move.

If you haven't noticed the stock market, outside ventures arent doing to well these days also...
It's not just the millions they are losing on the NBA team, you have to factor in the millions lost elsewhere also

Zion is such a dream. What a great guy!!!

Gayle will still be a billionaire tomorrow and 3 years from now.
Why you seem focused on her well being and those like her and not the millions that are in far less stable financial conditions and at risk of long-term unemployment is troubling.

Gayle needs to do something.
Zion is as likable of a star as there has been and we have him

You're mistaken my trying to spell it out for you to caring..
I could care less about Gayle's financial status tomorrow, just like I can care less about the thousands or millions that you say will be out of work..

No, I think the part about you not giving a frick about any of those workers came across pretty clear when you completely side-stepped any concern for their well-being to defend the response.

This is awesome what Zion is doing. If I was Ms. Benson I wouldn't let him do it though, I would pay up. The social media team for the Pelicans is usually pretty good, I don't know how they let such a puzzling statement out.
