I posted this question in the monroe thread(thanks to deion for bringing it up) but I think it deserves its own thread

Who would you prefer and why?

I really don't know. Fit wise, I go with Asik. He's more of a true center than Monroe is, which allows AD to plays his natural PF position. And Asik doesn't require that many touches / shot attempts.

But, player wise, Monroe is probably better already and has a higher ceiling. He's just not a true C. But he's still just 23, almost 24. Asik is 27.

But man this is tough. Asik is a better fit for what we need, but Monroe is probably the better player.

I'll go Monroe, with hopes that Whithey can improve and be a solid 3rd big and defensive big for us. But I would be happy with Asik as well.

imo monroe, way more athletic, hes younger, quicker, more built for our fast pace than asik would be.. asik is much bigger in the paint but monroe adds more on the offensive side. i like withey aswell so i dont feel like we need another similar (slightly better) caliber player.

Asik. Both are one sided players, but Asik is elite at his one side (the side we also need more help on) while Monroe is just pretty good :noeg: On top of that I think Asik can be had for the $8-$10 million range where Monroe may get $12+

Even though he's one of my primary targets, I do have some reservations about Asik. Will he be happy with the limited "starting" role he'd have here, and is his defense worth the lack of offense. We all saw the effect Stiemsma had on the offense as Monty would trot him out to the perimeter to create space and his man wouldn't follow.

If we went Asik, we would need a scorer at the 3.

If we went Monroe, we need to get more defensive at SF.

It's a tough choice.

Asik. Cheaper and better at what he does.

He's able to set good screens, smart off ball and can play next to Davis. Think of him as Bogut, not Steimsma.

They need better wings, but that is true regardless of what they do in the middle

I'm leaning Asik, but I'd be ecstatic with either.

This isn't me being a Rockets homer, but I think Asik fits better with the Pelicans.

Pelicans need defense.

Imagine Asik and Davis. Asik protecting the rim with Davis coming from the weakside blocking everything in sight... and imagine both of them on the glass.

Monroe would be like getting ice cream after a 3 course meal. Never a bad thing, but a luxury. He'd be our 4th or 3rd option on offense.

Asik would be like getting a burger after not eating in 24 hours. He wouldn't be the answer to all our defensive problems but he'd certainly help much more than Monroe.

Both would be lovely to have but Asik definitely fits better IMO.

Asik has reached his celing. Monroe hasn't. Gimme Monroe, with a new HC.

We have offensive weapons, if Asik can do what DeAndre Jordan did this past year, give me Asik every day of the week.

We still have a PG/2 SGs/2 PFs that can score, do we really need someone with an offensive game with a weak defensive game?

The only reason I say Monroe is because of age and I'd love to see how the two (AD and Monroe) could grow around each other

If we were in a position to compete for top 3 spot in the west and a championship I say Asik as more of a short term player that could possibly get you over the hump

Both you have to pay top dollar for, 5 years apart, one has no offense, the other is mediocre at defense

I agree

All in all I think Asik is a better fit but I'd rather Monroe

If we are giving up Anderson for Asik, or Monroe for Gordon. Than Monroe no question. If we are giving up the same than Asik is tempting with his better defense

I would probably go with Monroe as he is younger, a more marketable player, and someone I think that could help keep Davis with team long term.

While Monroe may have some defensive deficiencies I think that can be improved. I think he would make it would make AD's role on offense easier and he can put more effort on defense.
