Knowing the Pelicans, they will wait a week and announce they have signed Al to a 5 year extension

The silence is deafening.

Well if you want fake drama BI unfollowed the Pels on Instagram

Classic free agent move. Don’t even know why these guys keep doing this like it means anything.

Tons of guys do that the second they are Free Agents, and technically he is a RFA.
But I'm sure the drama will ensue.

Any true fan is going to hope their guys put it together and beat a lakers type team. Any true fan also knew that this was unlikely and that we wouldn't see major improvements or structural changes until year 2.
Short season/ zion injury/ shite coach, yes all unfortunate and we still saw a lot of improvement.
The fact that we attracted valuable free agents like Redick and Favors after a decade of no one is a blessing and hopefully a foreshadowing.
We finally have like 15 draft picks along with many young assest to build on.
Future is bright Sons

How does one find this info out? Did you notice that or did you see someone else mention it?

It's really a hairy situation with Ingram, if we are idiots.
The smart business decision from a financial point of view is to let him hit the market and match, knowing you'd max him out anyways, but you should gauge the markets value on him ensuring you get him at the market cost. In doing that though, you without a doubt will piss him off, even more so b/c you didn't offer him the extension at the beginning of the year like all his other draft mates got. and teams can only offer him a 4 year max, so if we match, that means he gets 4 years, not 5 like if we offer him our max. One more reason for him to be pissed.
If you are intent on keeping him, then you need to offer him your max contract before he hits the market, which shows that the organization has zero doubts about wanting him, and keeps the player happy about wanting to play for an organization that wants him. We aren't trading him, so this is what they have to do. Treating it like a purely business decision will not go over well.

If you had any thought that the best offer in the market would be less than a max, you consider it, even if he's not happy about it.
But I don't see how we'd think that has any chance of happening. Someone will offer him a max, so IMO it makes no sense to NOT offer him the max ourselves before he hits RFA.

sure on paper right now, but there are many teams that could make the room if they wanted to.

It's 4:45 on August 14th and Alvin Gentry isn't fired yet

If we don't proactively offer him a max, then there's something wrong. Like the club has an off-the-court problem with him somehow. Because proactively offering him a max is a no-brainer otherwise.
He's a MIP finalist, an all-star, and a guy who is not anywhere near his ceiling. If we don't offer him a max, it would really be telling him FU, even if we match later, because it would be saying that we aren't sure if you are worth a max or not.

Asking one of your top 2 players to go see what he can get on the open market is a good way to burn a bridge.

It'd be absolutely stupid to do so. Like I would think Dell Demps is running the show.
Ingram just proved he can continue to grow and improve. There's realistic potential potential for him to become a KD-lite

Yeah I highly doubt we let it get to that point. They have every intention of BI/Zion being the core of this team for years to come. I don't see them hemming and hawing too much over his contract extension.

Good time with the Covid and anticipation of a reduced salary cap expectation next year and possibly beyond, to let the market dictate his salary.
A number of teams that may have offered a max prior to Covid that may be reluctant to offer the same in a time of uncertainty.
Also, teams are becoming hesitant to offer contracts to players they know will definitely/likely be matched by the restricted FA team and tie up cap space for the 3-4 days a team has to consider matching.
Teams have taken notice in recent years of other teams missing out on their next available target(s) (Knicks last year, Lakers 2018, Lakers 2019, etc.) and dont want to risk losing out on a number of decent players bc they played the waiting game with the superstar only to be spurned.
But, teams are front loading contracts on players where the restricted FA team cant match (cap reasons) or doesnt want to tie up all their cap space in the early years of a contract bc usually those teams are already close to or in championship mode and the player would be the final piece to solidify that run. However, the Pels dont have any cap problems so that line of thinking is futile in this case.

Pels may not do that with Ingram, but Zo and Hart, I would definitely consider such an option.
