Why couldn't we deal LM and the other salaries to get CJ?

I don't have the numbers in front of me but I presume the math would have to work both ways.

Side Side Note, Willie looks slimmer as a coach than he did as a player.

When I was in high school I used to actually go to the team hotel of the opponent and get autographs as they left for the Arena. I met a ton of different players and I always got a kick out of how slim they all actually were. Dwight for example, he always looked so big and thick next to other players but even he was a bean pole.

Which makes sense when you really think about it, 265 at that height, that's pretty evenly distributed.

I’ll go out on a limb and say Portland wouldn’t want Lauri because he has two more years on his contract at least with a 6 million dollar buyout on the 3rd and final year. They like Josh because he’s shown more production overall and has a ridiculously team friendly contract.

Portland wanted expiring salary for CJ, so LM wouldn’t have worked. Also, why overpay LM when we already have a bunch of players that do the same thing?

If we did a sign and trade, Markannen’s deal would have been for multiple years guaranteed.

Portland wanted to dump salary immediately, which was mainly possible with us because we sent out Sato, Hart, Didi, and NAW along with taking back Nance into a TPE.

If we have long term money on the books, Portland looks at other deals.

Good thing Griff knew Lillard woukd get hurt and miss most of the year and a perennial playoff team that was just in the WCF would tear it all down so we could get CJ at a discount.

Are you forgetting that Chicago wasn't getting him unless we agreed to take back their crap, b/c they didn't have the cap space to sign him?
We did them a favor, yet we weren't rewarded for it, at all.
Had they refused to give us anything worth while, someone else would have given him an offer.

Good thing Griff didn’t blow his load on free agency once his top guys were signed and waited for an opportunity during the season to make a splash.

There’s other ways to look at it and I choose to be positive about it.

Then they don't get to sign Lonzo Ball. They had zero leverage or say in the matter. It was give us what we want or you don't get Lonzo Ball. And none of will ever know, but I 100% do not believe Chicago would have let this deal go if they HAD to give up a 1st.

This is incorrect. It was Chicago gives what we want, or they don't get them.

Not only that but I think they couldn’t trade for Derozen if they had to cut salary for Ball. We could’ve screwed up their entire off-season if Griff played hard ball.

Detroit has agreed to a buyout with Kemba Walker.

Walker is expected to be looking at the Lakers, Clip Show, and others on a very small contract.

Considering Lonzo’s knee is fricked and doesn’t appear to be getting any better, this worked out way better for us and worse for them.

Shamet just said it and it’s something we’ve discussed. I don’t expect us to do anything any time soon (which of course means we make some blockbuster trade at 5:01).

We will need to let the market play out, some big trades to happen and then we can hope a team wants to make a margins trade.

That would seem to be pretty obvious.

Well we still have about a $6.38m TPE from the Steven Adams trade last year and a $1m TPE from shipping out Didi to Portland last season, so we are able to absorb small contracts if we were to clear roster spots.

That may help with whatever happens with Ayton if he doesn’t end up with Indiana, which is the main team likely to have enough cap space not to be screwed by the BYC on a sign and trade.

I’m just saying, everyone likes to point out the what if’s, but what do you think was more likely?

A team that is in the playoffs every year and would have been in the thick of it again if not for major injuries. Very unlikely that team would sell everything off. What move would Griff had made if that was the case and CJ was unavailable?

I like Griff on the whole. I think he’s recovered nicely. But we got absolutely dog walked on the Lonzo trade considering he was restricted. If you look at the last 50 sign and trades, we by far got the worst return. It was embarrassing and unnecessary considering Lonzo was restricted.

And yes, I know Ayton is better than Lonzo. It doesn’t mean you still can’t get actual value for Lonzo or other restricted free agents. The Bucks got 2 first rd picks for Brogdon when he was restricted several years back. We couldn’t get 1 for Lonzo?

We basically had to get lucky and have Tim Hardaway Jr and Spencer Dinwiddie turn down our 20 mil plus a year, Lowry turn down our $30 mil a year, Portland get a new GM, Dame get hurt, and have CJ become unexpectedly available, for us to even play some mental chess and say okay well maybe getting absolutely nothing back in that Lonzo trade worked out okay because 8 months later we got CJ lol.

I’m happy about where we are now, but I also can’t forget some of Griffin’s asset mismanagement. He has made several extremely bad moves. Luckily, the AD and Jrue trade hauls has given us the ability to ladder out of those moves and make better ones. But, it’s still fair to point some of these moves out when grading Griffin on the whole.

And Right, Lauri probably would’ve been movable as well. He actually played well this year.

Why does any hypothetical matter at this point? We got the dream trade that changed the course of this franchise. That shite rarely ever happens and it was there for the taking because of the opportunity and the exceptions they got from the Ball trade. At the end of the day, the Ball trade did it’s job and everything aligned nicely.

I agree, It worked out, but I’d say it was like a 15-20% chance of it working out. Just like how Griff loves to move down in the draft, I’d say moving down in the draft works out around that same % for the team moving down.

Griffs compounding bad moves forced him to take these long shots, but he’s just been lucky that they worked out last year.

Yep.

Expecting shite like that to happen when we fail? Not a plan.

But it DID work out this time. So I don’t see the point in pissing and moaning about it any further.
