Every front office gets the opinions of their veteran players when it comes to things like that...

That doesn’t mean he can coach a whole team. Between the Vinson hype and Weatherspoon hype (especially on Reddit and Twitter), I feel like I’m losing my mind.

The problem is we know practically NOTHING about most assistants. Vinson spent years developing a reputation as a magic shot fixer and Weatherspoon provided the Pels social media team with engaging videos to post so they kept posting them.

I did some quick googling of Charles Lee and couldn't find hardly any info. A short profile by Kevin Arnovitz in a list of up and coming coaches from 2020 and several article/blogs about other team's coaching searches referencing that brief write up. I also found 1 fan video asking him about his time playing Israeli ball, and post game presser from when he coached summer league.

So Weatherspoon and Vison are known quantities to even casual Pels fans while Lee, the rumored runner up that was almost hired 8 months ago, is a mystery.

Speaking of Lee. Here's Marc Spears on The Jump saying he's hearing Lee is the front runner. LINK

It sounds like Lee would be a good choice. Here's the quote about him from Arnovitz:

quote:

Few assistant coaches saw a bigger season-to-season jump in our informal poll than Charles Lee, 35, who's in his sixth season working under Mike Budenholzer in Atlanta and now Milwaukee. Fans of Lee, who played professionally overseas before spending a couple of years as an equity trader on Wall Street, tout him as a five-tool coach who is every bit as comfortable having meaningful conversations with a backup point guard as he is dining with a team owner. Those who have worked with him say he has an intuitive sense of how to inspire improvement from players but also understands high-level strategy and the preparation required to implement it. He is, in the words of one peer, someone who is "categorically going to be an NBA head coach."

Question, what makes Becky Hammon any more qualified than Weatherspoon? Hammon has been an assistant coach and that's it. At least Weatherspoon has head coaching experience so you can judge what her in game decisions would be. It seems as though she sucked at recruiting but her teams did well before the previous coach's talent left. Personality I don't care who gets the job as long as positive results follow. And if you're concerned about someone's opinions outside of basketball as to whether or not they're hired, I personally think you're an idiot. I loathe trump but if he can coach the team to a championship then hire that orange bastard!

They could go with Ham instead. Seems like both guys are well thought of.

I’m sure he would have appreciated playing more over Bledsoe….

Please God not Spoon. I truly don’t know if I can handle “the first female head coach” with some shitty sobby backstory every single time we play.

Yeah, it's a very kind way of saying, "I am glad that you are gone," while also respecting what he learned from SVG over the last year.

That fact that she’s more qualified is a start. She’s been a full time assistant for 7 years under the best coach in basketball, and has been given high level coaching duties in that role.

Weatherspoon has been a full time assistant 1 year. 1. Under Stan Van Gundy.

Her experience in women’s college basketball at a low level conference is…not particularly relevant. And she didn’t do that well either.

Let’s talk when she’s been a full time assistant for 6-7 years and maybe been a lead assistant.

with the timing of the firing, i 100% thought we were positioning ourselves for Bud, b/c he's about to get fired

BUT

you may be right

I can't imagine Griff hiring Bud or any former head coach. Part of the struggle with Stan was the same as with Gentry, Griff wants input on things like who's getting minutes. Hell, he wants the next coach to keep most of the assistants they already have.

You typically need to go the first time head coach route for the GM to get coaches so thankful for the opportunity that they'll agree to meddling like that.

By they I meant the Bucks. Seems like he’s going to be a hot name soon.

I’m on the Lee train right now with the limited info we have.

Not sure how I feel about this. That's the coaches job and I could only seeing it resulting in tension within the organization. What other GMs operate like this? (Serious question)

Regardless, no idea why Bled was getting more minutes than Kira last year after we were obviously tanking.

I think it depends on how much meddling Griff is trying to do. "Stop playing Bledsoe as much and play Nickeil and Kira more." is a level of meddling most of us would probably agree with. And reportedly that's all it's been so far with Stan and Gentry.
