BREAKING: Billionaire mortgage lender Mat Ishbia is finalizing a purchase of the Phoenix Suns, sources tell ESPN. The deal, expected to be completed in the near future, would end the tumultuous tenure of owner Robert Sarver.
ESPN Sources: Ishbia's purchase price is in the neighborhood of $4 billion.
For reference, the Forbes list that came out last month valued the Suns at $2.7 billion LINK / The Pels were valued at $1.6

The WNBA Mercury are also part of the purchase, sources tell ESPN.

Jesus. That would be the highest price ever for a NBA team.
The Timberwolves sold for $1.5B in 2021.
The Jazz sold for $1.6B in 2020.
The Nets sold for $3.3B in 2019.
The Rockets sold for $2.2B in 2017.
The Clippers sold for $2B in 2014.
ETA: I see the Mercury are part of it as well so I guess it's not totally apples to apples.

This is why Forbes valuation is worthless.

Whatever value you think the Mercury brings to the deal, I can assure you it's a rounding error.
It is insane to see this $4 Billion number compared to those previous sales though.

"I will give you $5bil for the Suns"
"Well, we're trying to sell the WNBA team too"
"I will give you $4bil for the Suns and the WNBA team"
"Deal!!!"

I’m trying to remember what Bill Simmons predicted a few months ago
Just looked. Literally predicted 4-4.4b and that it would be Matt Ishbia lol

Yeah the Mercury being involved lowers the value, the WNBA doesn’t make any money.
I wonder if the new guy has other investors going in with him, because the 4 billion takes pretty much all of his net worth. If he’s alone then you may see the suns run cheap for awhile.

How much did this liability lower the price?
Eta- Looks like my joke has been conveyed better than my own attempt. Regardless I elect to keep it up for posterity

Clearly the Mercury are worth $1.3 billion

How much higher would the Suns’ cost have been without the Mercury too?

There is literally no way a local will buy the Pelicans when Gayle croaks ... gonna be some east coast hedge fund manager or Saudi Prince

It definitely won't be a single local as Gayle is the only billionaire in Louisiana. However a group could come together. Also it has to be mentioned that the money from the sale of the Saints/Pelicans will all go to charity so I doubt the asking prices will be what they normally would go for.
