Defensive range. JV works because Nance balances him out. Nance has to stay healthy for it to be viable. Trading for a guy like Allen just means you're trading skillets. Not sure if it makes us head and shoulders better but it's one of those things that looks good on paper.

Oh and that’s without this imaginary cheap contract for Jose that we can’t afford.

What is the “Goldilocks zone” where we have a starting center who isn’t a liability in some fashion?
Because it sounds like it would be a unicorn requiring a huge contract, meaning we jettison someone like CJ to pay for them.

Jonas is a very poor rim protector and slow footed on the perimeter.
It's not a bad strategy, we've been a top 6-8 defense for 2 seasons now. But if we face a 3pt shooting team in a playoff series and they're hitting a decent clip, that becomes a problem.
We can play Nance more and Val less, but Val will still get playing time.
If a Val/Allen deal can be worked out, having Nance/Allen play 48 minutes a game goes a long way to fix some of those potential playoff issues.

I love Val, but he'd be the weak link in a playoff series where teams amp up hunting the mismatch.
He'd be put in pick and rolls relentlessly. Any deficiencies he has now would be amplified in a playoff series with his slowness.
Not saying it's time right now to panic and we have to trade him no matter what. But I do think that's more than likely a big weak link in our defense in a playoff series.
Yep, just look at the playoffs against phoenix. Chris Paul absolutely torched JV in the PnR. It was ugly.

o 164mil + (15mil Dyson) + (20mil Hawk) = 199mil
So we would be at 199mil with 7 players.
That leave 20 mil from the tax with 6 roster spots and a starting center.
If 4 players are minimum (4•1.75mil) = 7mil
If 2 are first round picks (2•4mil) = 8mil
That leaves you 5mil for a starting center WITHOUT going in the tax. And that’s with only 2 mid/ late rd firsts and 6 minimum contracts….
I don’t have a vagina, you just aren’t very smart or can’t process this info.

Why do you care if we are a tax team?
and just stop doing math on something 3-4 years out. This team will without a doubt look different in 4 years. The odds of BI and Zion both being here are probably less than 50%.

I will say that defensively this year JV looks the best hes looked as a pelican far better than 2 years ago in that series. Does that mean he still won’t have issues in the playoffs? Probably will but I’m not sure it would be as bad as two years ago though.

I mean Jose is a fan favorite and everything but if he's out of the rotation then he wont be getting an extension unless its at or near the minimum. You don't extend a guy that you dont even play

In fact, if they are, that would be the best thing ever, because that would mean we are winning titles or legit coming close. IF we're not coming close, we darn sure better be moving some of those pieces.

I just hate that we almost have to have 2 streams of thought: 1 on what we should or want to do, and a 2nd on what we probably will have to consider based on our proclivity to avoid the tax.

Bruh I give you a logical response and actual analytical data as to the reasoning why we would be willing to part ways with Jose and that he isn’t a someone we go over the tax for.
I’m not answer that dumb fricking question or changing the conversation. Ignorant.

I dont think anyone cares about being a tax team but until Gayle actually does it, we should assume we wont

I think the idea is that we MAY pay the tax for a winner but there is no point in locking ourselves into the tax without a realistic chance of doing damage in the playoffs.
Which means probably not this season unless we get a major piece falling into our laps.

Fair enough I trust those guys.
Here is the cap situation over the next 5 years.
You have to either extend or trade JV.
If someone like Allen comes along thats 20M per year until 2025-26.
IF you pay BI, you are looking at 40-50M starting the moment next season ends.
Trey will get somewhere around 5/150 or an additional 30M a year which starts at the same time of BI's new deal.
2025-26 Season already has 98.8M on the books for 6 players (
). When you factor in the above:
20 + 30 + 50 = 100M in new contracts.
We now have 198.8M in contracts for 9 players and still need to pay for other roles who quite frankly are not gonna take 2M a year
Trading BI opens you up to being more flexible during the 3 year championship window.

Well one involves building around Zion/ BI and the other involves blowing it up. I agree it’s sucks we are stuck in the twilight zone.
The plan now would be to decide if it’s worth to get another piece before the playoffs that would be a big enough push to make this season make or break for Bi/ Zion.
If you get Allen then it’s “ok we are set on defense, now it’s up to BI/ Zion for offense” If they don’t step up then you blow it the frick. Having Val just doesn’t give us the ability to put that accountability on those guys.

oh no. one of the best PG's of all time made a big center look silly.
CP3 also did that to Jokic the year before, averaging 25 and 10 on 63% shooting in a sweep.
I agree JV isnt' the best defender, and i don't think he can be out there against starting PG's like that in the playoffs, but that doesn't mean he still can't be a playoff contributor in another role.
But you also can't ignore the fact that our DRtg has been elite the last 2 years, although that means nothign if it doens't translate to the playoffs.
Jarrett Allen has played in 14 playoff games. He's posted a negative +/- in 10 of them.
His last 3 games in the playoff last year against the Knicks he grabbed 5, 4 and 4 rebounds, playing 36 minutes + in each game.
There is no 5 we are going to get that can do it all. It will always be a committee approach. I just don't see the vast upgrade Allen gives us over Larry late in games.
I'm also not trying to say we need to keep JV. I do think he needs to be upgraded. I'd just prefer to upgrade that position with a younger player on a rookie deal, not someone making $20M that makes us marginally better at best.

Thank you for that breakdown…. This also doesn’t include Hawk/ Dyson extension the next year and again no starting center..

Hence our interest in Gafford, who has two years left on his deal after this one.

It’s not even a question of if we “pay the tax”. The question Teddy actually asked is “Will Gale pay 20+mil into the tax”
Simple answer: not for Jose/ Val/ Nance/ Lidell/ Naji
