Pelicans Trade Rumors and Chatter

Figure since we are coming up on the trade deadline in a month or so we can start a thread for Pelicans rumors and ONLY Pelicans rumors.
To start off with ScoopB

New Orleans Pelicans Update: Pelicans are in the market for more rim protection as well as a gunner they can bring off the bench. Pelicans have seen success with the current make up of the roster, but if they see a window of opportunity to improve it at the deadline they will.

That lady legend nba announcer ( forget name) was saying we need a defensive center for the playoffs

I like this idea from Shamit:

Wonder if there's a 3 way config that gets JV to Golden State and Jarrett Allen to New Orleans. Cleveland pulling Moody or Kuminga and assets + salary in the process.

When I hear gunner, I think of someone like Jordan Clarkson or Lou Will when he was scoring in bunches off the bench for the Clips.

That’s my thoughts also, the problem is though IMO we already have someone in that mold on the bench in Hawk.

more rim protection
That sounds like a Zeller upgrade more than a JV upgrade. Also, it being a backup player means attaching a 1st is too much unless we get 2nds back or maybe dump EJ too.
Something like:
Kira/EJ/Zeller/Pels 1st top 20 protected
Nick Richards/Future 2nd
I'm not saying Richards should be the target, although he does check a lot of boxes as a 3rd center, but this is probably the kind of deal we'd be talking about.

I don’t get the trade JV stuff, also not a fan of Shamit

Yeah I just don’t see why we trade Val considering how vital he’s been this year. Wanting a defensive center sounds like we’re shopping Nance, which makes since to me. Upgrading a backup defensive minded center in Nance is cheaper and easier than upgrading JV.
I like the Richards trade. He’s young, can be resigned to a reasonable contract, only giving up a late first. I think we could even keep EJ.

Idk I’d hate to bring someone in and F up the chemistry of this team

That's basically my thought as well. Don't think the organization is going to do it as long as they continue to play well. Any move will be an addition and NOT a replacement of a rotational guy.
The problem with going with a replacement of a key rotational player is the fact that there's no guarantee the replacement guy will play as well as the player they're replace this year since it takes time and lots of reps to develop chemistry and learn how to play at a high level in a new system with new players. When we traded for CJ, he even said he didn't know the system at all during his first year here.

I think the only reason we would trade JV is because we are far apart on contract extension talks.
Posted on 1/12/24 at 5:58 pm to Soggymoss
Didn’t think about that, would be disappointing.

I could be completely wrong but I don’t think this is the case. If anything the way JV was asking for an extension in the offseason, I feel like he would give us a discount. I think the issue may be with BI and Trey’s new deals coming up they may hesitant to extend JV. Personally, I think JV deserves an extension.

You extend JV. You just can’t really overpay for him.
Also JV is not an either/or for the Trey/BI situation. We would still need to have someone like JV. The bigger thing is start using draft picks on big men to be role players. The Pels have too many guard/wings as it is. There future draft positions line up well to draft rotational big men.

I think you could be. The guy we are tied to the most is Jarrett Allen who’s under contract for 2 more years after this one.
We could just as easily put a 2 year extension on the table for JV

I mean I don’t think thats a fair comparison. I love JV but I think Jarrett Allen is the better player. Pels may be willing to pay someone like Allen over extending someone like JV. For instance, Pels might believe Allen is worth that in investment even with BI/Trey deals while JV is not despite him being even cheaper. I really don’t think it’s difficult to extend JV, despite his great play this season- I still believe not many people will overpay for him.

Hopefully he takes a discount with us rather than take a big deal with a Charlotte or Washington type team

Yea I mean that’s like getting the pink starburst variety of gunner. But sometimes you open up the pack and you just get the Jannero Pargo flavor of gunner.

Hawk is a Gunner in the makeup of a Klay Thompson or RIP Hamilton movement shooter.
I believe the front office is looking for a gunner in the mold of a Clarkson/CJ type. A guy that can create his own shot off the dribble and with the pull up from both 2 and 3 pt range

I guess my question is do we really need that? Especially with all the players we already have that can contribute in a variety of ways.
