34 inch max vert at combine, 32 inch no step. 9'4" standing reach. He went from 257 at the combine to 285 as a rookie and i wouldn't be surprised if he was playing close to 300 at some point. Defensively, he was jumping so much to block shots. Just too much.

He made lebron look like a child

I'm getting the impression that you're not crazy about him.

Just me?

It's nothing personal. If he was healthy, I'd be interested, but he is not. He is as damaged as goods come.

I actually used to watch him beast in high school, so I know what his "high reward" was. Then his legs gave out on him. I think he'd be wise to call it a career (for the sake of walking in 10 years), but money talks.

It's not like we'd be giving him a deal that'll cripple us down the road. Worse case scenario he doesn't work out and we part ways after a season.

We waste a roster spot in a year we are expected to compete. We need a 5 to play, not ache.

So with the little money we have left, who is out there that we could get that is better than Stiemsma?

If, in your opinion, there is no one out there better than what we already have, why not give Oden a small deal?

Again, define small. That cash isn't going to catch fire. It could be used for more assets in the future.

I feel like you are posturing here.

Ok, what pieces that are currently available for cheap are out there right now that you would like to see?

If there is no one, why not give Oden a 1 year deal with a team option 2nd? You would still have control of that money in the future.

The Pelicans, sources said, are building their pitch around the fact that going to New Orleans would enable Oden to make his comeback far away from the media glare and with no immediate pressure to cope with as he tries again to bounce back from the knee issues that have limited the 25-year-old to just 82 career regular-season games since being drafted in 2007.

I think this will be pretty important to Oden. This article is from May 2012, but it describes Oden as a shy introvert that's not just looking for an undeserved payday. That actually lines up with him taking a huge $7 or so million paycut in Portland that he didn't have to take. After reading this I'm leaning more towards this is a serious comeback attempt rather than a cash grab.

quote:

"You're a fun-loving guy with a ton of personality," I said. "So why do you hate it so much when people approach you in public? Why don't you let your personality shine through and smile when you take pictures with fans?"

"Because I don't understand why they are so excited to meet me," Greg responded. "I'm just a person. I guess I didn't really mind it when I was at Ohio State and even right after I was drafted, but it just seems so fake now. Like, why are you bothering me at dinner for a picture when I'm nothing now?"

..."I don't care about what all of these injuries mean for any legacy I might have," he said. "I just want to play basketball. I could've signed with a team after Portland cut me and just sat on the bench and collected paychecks, but that's not my style. That just seems really unethical. Besides, money doesn't matter to me. I've got enough money. All I want is to get 100 percent healthy and get back on the court."

I just think that if he stays healthy and plays near the level he played in when he was healthy (I do realize how big that IF is), I think he instantly catapults us to a darkhorse title contender.

No other player available does that. Why not give him a 1 year deal just to see what he can do?

No risk, high reward.

You don't have to spend for the sake of spending. Dell could use that money to buy back into the draft next year. Again, it isn't catching fire.

It's not going to be $1 million a year, which means a S&T with Portland which means who are we giving up to make this happen?

quote:

The New Orleans meeting is expected to include Mickey Loomis, the Pelicans' head of basketball operations and the NFL Saints' executive vice president and general manager, as well as Pelicans GM Dell Demps and coach Monty Williams. The Pelicans are expected to offer a contract paying close to $3 million in the first season. At least three other teams are expected to offer similar money, a league source said.

Also, this was how Spears tweeted about the article:

Pelicans expected to bring a high ranking NFL executive & quality offer to Greg Oden meeting. LINK

Benson owning the team really is nice.

How is taking a chance on a 2nd round draft pick any different than signing Oden?
