An article in the Advocate seems to be suggesting that there is a deal in the works that would involve the Pelicans sending Russ Smith to the Rockets for Parsons. The idea seems to be that the Rockets directed us to get Smith to trade to them. Parsons has an expiring contract like Asik. The Rockets are presumably trying to get Carmelo Anthony. Is there any substance to this?

No way this is a real rumor. They could get so much more for Parsons.

Not saying this rumor is true, or that I believe it, but that's kind of the point. They are trying to shed major salary, and if they get melo they have no need for parsons.

It's not even a rumor. The article just says it would be a good move to make lol. LINK

quote:

A trade looks like the best option, and another one with Houston tops the list. Asik became available because the Rockets are clearing space in an attempt to sign Anthony. Houston also is shopping other players, including point guard Jeremy Lin and small forward Chandler Parsons.

If Demps could wrangle Parsons away, it would be something of a coup. A promising player at 25, Parsons at 6-foot-9 has good length for his position, has excellent range and is a finisher on the fast break and on drives to the basket. He made $926,500 last season, his third in the NBA, and is slated to receive $964,750 this season, a steal for a player of his ability.

That the Asik deal has been held up to work out “final details” makes it look like Parsons may be in play. Like Asik, he has one year left on his contract. It’s also interesting that the Pelicans traded point guard Pierre Jackson to the Philadelphia 76ers for a second-round pick Thursday — only to get back a point guard, Louisville’s Russ Smith. Houston was interested in Louisiana-Lafayette point guard Elfrid Payton. Like Payton, Smith is good defensively, which the Rockets covet, and as a rookie second-rounder, he would be inexpensive.

Not to mention Parsons is a RFA, so it will take something close to max money to pry him away. We would have to move Gordon to make it happen. Maybe the Gordon for Martin rumor is true, but I'm not sure how making both moves works with the cap.

Parsons is a FA and will get a huge contract. And Houston would get a lot in a S&T for him. Like...a lot.

This is not even a pipe dream. No truth whatsoever.

Wait is Parsons a FA? Article says he has one year left, which would be laughable if they couldn't get that right.

Money wouldn't work for the Pels even if the they gave the Rockets Russ Smith and Ryno

Not to mention the whole rumor is ridiculous

Not at all a rumor. It is more of a useless article written by a reporter who does not understand the concept of restricted free agency and the salary cap.

Yea, Houston made a move earlier this off season to basically void the last year of Parsons' contract and make him a RFA this year, rather than waiting until next off season when he would be an unrestricted free agent (due to being a second rd pick and having 4 years played in the league).

Pelicans would, Rockets wouldn't. Rumor has it Parsons is being talked about in a sign-and-trade with Minnesota (along with other assets) to get Kevin Love.

lol no it's just a rumor that that is an option that Minnesota also has a mutual interest in. Supposedly Minnesota's first choice was a trade with the Warriors involving Klay Thompson. Back-up plan is a trade with Houston involving Parsons.

So that's the rumor.

chandler parsons is one of the 4 or 5 most valuable assets in the league due to his salary and skill set

rox aren't moving him unless it's for an a-list superstar

He's not going to have that salary for much longer. He's a restricted free agent right now... meaning he's about to get paid what he's worth. Somewhere around $10 million per year.
