Interesting comparison. Crawford, the next Michael Jordan in his own mind, was humbled by failing out of the league and seems to be better for it. Miller's problem was almost the opposite. He spent 4 years at Kentucky being the background glue guy to future superstars and seemed to not have a strong enough individual game to make it in the NBA. He went to Germany and improved his game enough to be a Finals MVP in his league. Hopefully he's ready to blossom like Crawford did.

All we really need Miller to do is be a catch and shoot 3 guy. Let him absorb some of those open looks Dante and Hill get

Royce O’ Neale opted out his agreed contract with Zalgiris Kaunas and as Chema de Lucas reports, he will be joining the Jazz with a 3-year deal. The contract will be fully guaranteed for the first season, while it won’t be a two-way one.
He was on our summer league team. A bit surprised the Jazz fully guaranteed his 1st year.

Whoa. Per @BobbyMarks42, Darius Miller's contract value in 2017-18 is $2.1 million. This has major implications.
Between Miller & Jackson, NOLA has used ~$3M of their MLE, which means ~$2.3M is left under the Taxpayer MLE or ~$5.5M under the full MLE.
So, unless the Pelicans sign Rondo for $2.3 million or less, they're going to hard cap themselves.
Honestly, hard capping themselves isn't the biggest deal in the world. They probably don't have the assets to make enough uneven trades and get salary above $125 million anyway, unless they really overpay Dante with Bird Rights.

but Darius' contract is not guaranteed right? so what does it matter?
Posted on 7/18/17 at 1:11 pm to TigerinATL
That seems like a steep price to pay for Miller. Weird that the contract details are coming out now though...another move on the horizon? Maybe the QPon move pays for Miller instead of using MLE?

Not really. His shooting in Germany was elite so any team that is sold on that translating to the NBA is probably selling themselves on getting a healthy QPon level player which is worth more than the minimum.

That's not really possible, it's not like they could trade QPon to Germany. What dumping QPon will do though is get them far enough away from the tax that they can pay Rondo and Cunningham.

Miller can only be signed to non-minimum using MLE or BAE. We don't have space to sign him so he has to fit in an exception. They are going to dump salary before officially signing Miller and Rondo.
I think we are dumping enough salary to use the full MLE approximately: Rondo $4.5M, Miller $2.1M, FJ $1.2M. (Rondo already got $3M from Chicago)

That is super surprising.
If Dell hardcaps this team...

The hard cap has been made out as this thing that teams want to avoid at all costs but Detroit went into the hard cap pretty early because they knew what moves they wanted to and could make. Hard capping themselves meant they couldn't match KCP, but at that point they didn't plan to.
I'm sure at some point earlier in the offseason Demps had dreams of flipping Asik for Wesley Matthews and Ajinca/Moore/QPon for Bledsoe/Dudley. Those 2 uneven trades could have ended up pushing them over the Apron, something not allowed if you're hard capped. but it would have basically required multiple uneven trades and using exceptions to get there. I think the available moves left for the Pels to play make the hard cap not matter, but they still want to avoid the tax.

Summer League Champion L.A. Lakers Have a Star in Lonzo Ball at @BleacherReport - huge buzz even before he played LINK
This didn't seem like it deserved it's own thread but the amount of excitement over Summer League has been ridiculous. It's amazing how SL goes from pointless to proof of future greatness when the Lakers are winning the "championship" with Lonzo.

or maybe Lonzo really is one of the next NBA stars playing for the NBA's most historic franchise...

We were hardcapped in 2015-2016 too. Lots of teams are hardcapped right now (MEM, SAS, HOU, LAC, TOR, DET). That is not as big of a deal as making sure they think they avoid the tax and are able to re-sign Cunningham.
They want to be right under the tax I assume (maybe a minimum contract under the tax), but not sure exactly how much unlikely bonuses we have counting towards the apron.

I'm not saying Lonzo isn't going to be good, but him being good doesn't validate Summer League. People are right to discount the performances in a league where a lot of NBA level defense doesn't get played.
Posted on 7/18/17 at 1:48 pm to TigerinATL
The list of past Summer League MVP winners is mainly meh.
Besides Lonzo, the main names are Lillard and Jonas Valaciunas. And Lillard was only co-MVP.
Lonzo may look good against other rookies and guys playing for a fringe roster spot but let's see him against real competition.

He's a good player, offensively he's got high iq to run the point. He has that jacked up shot, but if it goes in then whatever.
His issue is going to be abused defensively, he is slow.

I'd be cool with either Crabbe or Matthews. Crabbe is an elite shooter, Matthews a better defender, but Crabbe can defend more SFs, Matthews make less money and has less years on his contract, Crabbe is in the same age range as our 3 stars, Matthews had an Achilles injury, Crabbe is had an Achilles injury and is having a minor foot surgery this summer
Only issue is that Crabbe was competing with Evan Turner for minutes and only started 7 games last season and played 28 mins a game. Wesley started all 73 games that he played in and averaged 34 mins
Would it be crazy to suggest Asik + Solo for Crabbe?
