Ginsberg on twitter tracking how playoff blowouts (4 or 5 game series) was a big factor in the drop in the salary cap projection
less playoff games = less TV advertising = less money going from Turner & Disney to NBA = lowe salary cap
LeBron & Steph need to start throwing a couple of those early round games to help the rest of the players in the Association... take 1 for the team

quote:U heard that discussion during the playoffs. I find it hard to believe that 1) there was already the expectation of 6-7 game series in the calculations and 2) that it makes that much of a difference in the cap.

the cap jumped up by about $2M last year after the playoffs. it was expected to be at $92M and the league moved it to $94M after the Finals. so this isn't unprecedented
ETA- it's also about home gate revenue. reports were floating around that the Warriors would get an extra $11M by having a game 5 at home

Just looking at this, there really is a lot of motivation to extend the playoffs, and there's only one way to reliably do that...dirty refs

New max for 7-9 year players is 29.7 with the cap being 99 mil. Not sure if that's been posted here.

Another thing to point out for the people freaking out about trading Tim Frazier, there is another backup PG on the roster but he's officially listed as an SG. They ran Crawford as a backup PG next to Moore a lot last season and commented on how they liked that pairing. Crawford isn't officially a PG, but he was played like one last year.

i dont remember last year's playoffs being particularly good or interesting but you had two game 7s between three star studded teams in OKC, GS, and CLE.
they need the big time teams/stars to play on the biggest stage for as long as possible.
that could be a problem w/ the Warriors. the interesting thing is that the league has gone bananas and teams seem to be going for ways to compete with them rather than hibernating.

The Phoenix Suns are attempting to trade Eric Bledsoe in any package they discuss with rival teams leading up to the draft. Bledsoe has two seasons and $29 million remaining on his contract. Phoenix has held trade talks with the Chicago Bulls on Jimmy Butler, as well as the Indiana Pacers on Paul George and the New York Knicks on Kristaps Porzingis. The Suns own the No. 4 overall pick in the draft.
Don't need Frazier with Bledsoe on the team...

Whoof. This is poetic justice. Hopefully, the lowered cap due to this stupid incarnation of a team only means they will be further into the luxury tax eventually or will cost them valuable depth in players like Iggy or Livingston.
Off topic slightly, the NBA would be dumb not to re-consider the "top 16 teams in the playoffs" if Lebron goes West right?

obviously, they'd like extra home revenue, but i dont know if a lower cap really changes much for the Warriors
i'm all for 1-16 right now. but they would have to figure out conferences etc...i'm a fan of Ziller's plan

Exactly and with the Finch hiring we don't even need a true PG because the offense will run through the bigs. Moore, Q-Pon, and Crawford on the floor together while less than ideal would work.

I think it's kind of funny that a guy called The Zen Master and known for dealing well with difficult players appears to be letting stubborn pride make franchise changing decisions.

What the shite. NYC is gonna melt.

I honestly cannot wait to see the Draft hall if that goes down.
I honestly think it will be close to a riot.

I think I see what they're thinking. Melo has no trade value at all but Porzingis does. You get Bledsoe + Melo to "win" now and you get a young core of Chriss + 4 + 8 for down the road.
The silver lining for the Pelicans is that it should take another team out of the market for Holiday and shifts the leverage to the team. Hopefully they'll reduce their offer by $2 million to reflect the change in the cap projection.
