Seriously? Obviously that stuff is secondary to his performance on the court. Take a deep breath my man

Yea that's the only reason you'd draft him.
Well, placing any importance in it is already heading down that slope, so....carry on.

So now everyone's talking about Noel and Porter as real possibilities I'm going to be pretty pissed when we end up drafting Burke now
Posted on 6/24/13 at 11:24 am to GynoSandberg
are athletic big men like Noel the way the league is trending now? seems like skinnier big men who play almost a combo PF/C position are becoming more of a norm than the pure centers the league had in the 90s.

Why? Is this a trap? Did you just shite yourself?

Well, character is very important

Otto porters lack of size is more concerning than Noel's IMO

Yeah, let's go ahead and complete the World Wide Wes Circus. Hell, maybe we could go ahead and trade all of them to the Knicks for a protected first in 2025.

In my opinion, winning will go farther in winning new fans than any PR ploy like that. If that's why you're drafting him, our front office is in trouble.
I agree. I don't know if it has been said, but supposedly he keeps some shady company as well. He couldn't/wouldn't pick an agent for a long time. He has other injury and development concerns. There is a reason he is starting to drop now. I don't see why NO would pick him. He is not going to be ready for at least the 1st half of the season and will be slowly adjusting the remainder. So his entire rookie year will be a waste.
The PR stuff just doesn't matter. They'd get a bigger bump bringing home a Lsu or Louisiana based player (trading for Monroe?), but everybody on here always says how stupid that is..

He's 2.5 inches shorter and only 8 pounds lighter and will never be asked to defend Marc Gasol one on one in the post....

We see how that worked out in the end.

There is still a lot of bulk at the center position in the league. A lot of 250+ centers. But you can only "bully" a guy so much without picking up fouls. I don't think size is as much of a concern if we are talking a 230 lb Noel. Sanders, Noah, Chandler, Bosh, etc enjoyed recent success at lighter weights than their counterparts.

He'll have to guard big athletic 3's is space. Not only is he slight but he has average athleticism
Noel can get pushed around but still has his athleticism. Shot blocking and length can negate "power".

Yet Monty always mentioned our need to improve perimeter and wing defense specifically
Well if Noel drops, the permeter defenders aren't available. Plus there is FA and there is more than one way to skin a cat. A back line of Davis/Noel can clean up mistakes.

So, which rim running center plied his trade in the conference finals this year? Gasol? Hibbert? Duncan and Splitter? I can't even think of Bosh doing much running.
So we are judging the effectiveness of a rookie player/skill set based on what teams, who dont have an athlete like Noel at the 5, did in the conference and nba finals? Seems like a bit of a stretch to me.
To answer your question, San Antonio got out and did some rim running.
Rim running doesnt have to be a fast break. Its beating your man down the floor and getting good, deep position on him or a smaller help defender or sucking help in leaving a shooter open. This is what Pop was talking about in his huddles when he kept telling his guys PACE.
