The penalties would happen as long as you are over the 1st or 2nd apron, during the season.
But we can't be a 1st apron team b/c we are hardcapped, meaning we have to stay under the 1st apron, so we don't really have any penalties to deal with other than staying under the 1st apron, which is $178M. The Tax line is $170.8M. Many teams get hardcapped every year. It's not uncommon.

The Celtics for instance have to deal with the penalties of being a 2nd apron team all season, unless they were to make a trade to get under it, then the penalties would go away.
As long as your salaries put you over the 1st or 2nd apron, the penalties/restrictions apply until you get under it.

What they mean by once the season is finalized is more for if you are an under the tax team, a tax team, a 1st apron team, or 2nd apron team. That isn't official until the season ends, and that's just to determine what your tax bill will be at the end of the season, or if you're going to be getting the taxpayer allocation money that goes to all the non tax teams.

So if we weren’t hard capped we could go over the 1st apron for the beginning of the season then get back under during the season and the penalties would disappear? But since we are hardcapped, we have to be under the 1st apron by the start of the regular season?

We have to stay under the 1st apron all season.
When you are hardcapped that's for the entire season, there's no getting out of it.

Teams get hard-capped if they take back more salary in a trade than they send out, acquire a player via sign-and-trade or sign a player off the buyout market who was previously earning more than the non-taxpayer mid-level exception

and yes if we weren't hardcapped, then we could go over the 1st apron or 2nd apron, but I don't know if that's even possible via trades, b/c you'd be adding salary in a trade which would hardcap you.
Teams that are over the aprons usually are b/c they resigned players to larger contracts

We essentially have (4) options IMO.

(3) involve keeping BI for now:
Cost: 1-2 1st
Assets: Kessler/ Mark Williams/ Duren

Option #4:
BI for Allen + pick(s)

I honestly think Cavs do this under (1) circumstance. That they also get a very good cheap guard for depth... Knowing they have so much money in Lavert/ Mitchell/ Garland.

Cavs: BI + Jose
Pels: 1-2 1st + Allen + no name needed
Wizards: Lavert + 2nd via WAS

I can see a team like the Cavs wanting Jose with the situation they are in. Not saying we should or that it will happen but I can see that request.

- serious post, not trying to stir anything.

Cavs will be at (90mil) with Mitchell/ Garland the following year. If there is ever a team that would value or want Jose in a deal its probably them.

I wonder if we end up keeping Ingram, whether he will accept this is Murray’s team now.
It feels this is our year to go all- in. I’d give Utah 2 Firsts for Kessler and call it a day.

The issue is that Ainge does not want "our" (2) 1st. It looks like we were relying on getting better picks from another team in order to acquire Kessler.

So if we traded BI to the Kings then they want (2) future kings picks. Since that didn't happen Aingie doesn't value picks from Pels/ Suns/ NYK as highly as shitty teams. Which is common sense but some seem to think every 1st has equal value.

Ummmm, this is Zion’s team…

Murray even told you as much with his “That’s our superstar” quote

Thanks dude. The only remaining question I have is does “the hard cap is in effect for the entire season” include the off-season?

Basically I’m asking if we’re hardcapped as it stands right now, meaning it’s literally impossible to max out Ingram without a deal being done to shed salary today?

Or are we hardcapped beginning when the regular season starts? Meaning we could max out Ingram today so long as we shed salary before the season begins?

I don’t want to max out Ingram btw, this was just an easy hypothetical to come up with

Until the league season officially ends, which is usually not long after the Finals ends.

BI's extension doesn't affect this year. His salary this year isn't changing regardelss of what happens. His new annual salary from his extension is for next year, just like Trey's.

I’d offer Utah 2 unprotected 1’sts and 2 swaps and just get a Kesslertrade done. We need a big body for Jokic, Embiid, Wemby, Jonas, Sabonis, Sengun, Dallas’s 2 bigs, etc

Our picks should be in the high teens/20’s. I doubt the swaps ever convey and if they do, it won’t be extreme. Utah is going nowhere soon in a stacked west.

Yeah..BI does not need to be paid more than $15 million a year than Brunson.

If I’m griff I show BI that contract and laugh at his demands

I'll say this about Brunson.

That is one way to be beloved by your team and it's fans for the rest of your life, especially if they win a title.

Also, I think it's incredibly dumb to leave $113M on the table b/c you feel like being nice and think you can recoup it in 3 years as a 32 year old who's 6'1".
It is beyond stupid to pay OG more than Brunson

Have to think the way he’s looking at it is he’s still making 40 million a year. What could you possibly need more money than that for? Might as well try to win some titles

BI needs to learn some self awareness. He needs someone to sit him down, show him Brunson’s contract and say”do you honestly think you deserve more than him?” If BI says yes, then trade him for Pennie’s because he’ll never learn
