but we don't need our 5 scoring the ball. Shots he takes are shots taken away from Zion, BI, Murray, CJ, Trey, Hawkins, even Herb and his superior 3 point shooting.
I'd rather a 5 that is an elite defender of the rim and will work his arse off on the offensive glass after setting good screens.

IMO, it would be huge for this team to be able to play 4 out with the ball in Zion's hands while still being able to matchup against larger centers on the other side of the court. Rather than having an extra defender parked in the paint to make life harder on Zion (not that he can't score around them anyway, but it would take away some of the beating that he will take in the paint).

I generally agree that it shouldn't be a centerpiece of your offense, but as long as Zion's range is 8 feet, you have to try to pull the opposing 5 away from the paint. The threat of a stretch 5 that can knock down open 3s provides some help there.

Ingram was much better on defense this year than any other year here. He wasn't herb, but he was up to average nba level defense and was sneaky at rim protecting. There's also a lot of shite that doesn't show up on the stat sheet that teddy talked about.

I'm not saying BI is some awesome defender, but i thought it was very obvious this year that there was more effort from him on that side of the ball. He still had his lapses of not caring, but who doesn't. The effort to help rebound and block shots was there, and we saw the same from Trey too, and when you have two guys that are that long and athletic helping out on that end of the court it makes a huge diffference. We weren't a top 10 defense just b/c of Herb. CJ is horrible on defense and JV isn't a good rim protector or perimeter defender. BI and Zion are big reasons why we were the 6th best defense this year.
As i said, if you actually watched and paid attention this year, you'd have noticed that, assuming you don't just blindly hate BI and refuse to say anythign positive about him.

I think spacing is king and our defense wasnt really our problem last year. If you can pull the other team's center out to the 3pt line because WCJ is a threat from 3 then that completely opens up the offense.
We got swept because we were historically bad on offense. We held up pretty well on defense against the thunder and wouldve held up even better if we couldve made some shots and allowed our guys to get back and get set on defense

Ingram was great for about a month stretch. And I was very complimentary of him when he was playing like that.

We've seen short stretches of what he can be for this team. If he did it consistently, there would be no negotiation with him. The Pelicans would have given him a max without question.
The reality is that he has always reverted to back to selfish offense and lazy defense. People on this board keep claiming that he played that way due injury at the end of the year. I think that is bullshite.
I don't hate Ingram. I hate that he is not the player that this team needs, even though he could be if he wanted to. And if he doesn't want to be what the Pelicans need, it's just wasting time and money keeping him on the team.

From the Murray intro presser, neither Griff, Willie, or Dejounte sound like they expect BI to be moved. Murray said he and BI are friends that have known each other since high school and BI texted him the morning the trade happened to see if he might get traded to the Pels.

They are obviously saying the right things, because he is on the team. No deal seems imminent. You never know whats going to happen.
But I think they are fine with waiting it out at this point.

That was more than lip service or repeating what Griff told them to say and staying on message though. Willie and Dejounte seem like they genuinely expect BI to be on the team this season. I'm sure Griff keeps trade talks very compartmentalized, but supposedly BI's agent is/was looking for trade destinations, so it's not a total secret, but they talked like they had no reservations about BI's status with the Pels.

Absolutely trashing the dude publicly before he's traded is exactly how a lockeroom gets destroyed. Teams know we wouldn't want him or don't have a plan but will help us move him instead of letting us crumble internally?

BI staying makes sense if we can still get a starting center and back up 4. The issue for me is guard depth and getting some of these young guys the minutes they need to develop, mainly Hawkins.

I don’t think you take Herb out of the starting lineup. If anything, you’re sending CJ to the bench. You can’t take the trade off from Herbs defense

The Pels won a lot of games last year with the more balanced bench units winning their minutes and the starters being pretty meh. I would expect to see the same thing happen to start the year until they see enough success with certain lineups to actually bench some big names in favor of balance.

No. According to the board DJ is replacing BI's minutes and not to pair with CJ because CJ has to go to the bench. And Herb has always been our starting SG. But we are ok with CJ playing PG and Trey/ Zion are fine at C. So the ideal lineup from the board would be:
CJ
Herb
BI
Trey
Zion
Clearly Herb is the starting SG. DJ can come off the bench bringing offense and defense since Herb/ CJ are starting. CJ can handle PG duties. Defense/ offense balance. Everyone is happy.
