Durant probably wins two in OKC if they are able to retain Harden. One which would have taken the last one away from Duncan. It’s just hard to compare the eras and organizational structure the other two guys had.

Would have, could have, should have..

But he didn't. Career is about what you accomplished. Not what you could have done..

It’s impossible to have this discussion without nuance.

Here is my case why Kareem should be on the list: 1. My dad says he doesn't work hard enough on defense. 2. A lot of times, he doesn't even run down court. 3. He doesn't really try except during the playoffs.

What’s your vector, victor?

The number of people saying Bill Russell reflects the atrocious state of NBA education among fans today. He has a ring on one of his toes because he ran out of fingers for them all, and he was the only common denominator for those 11 championships, including Red who only coached 9 of them.

He also won 2 championships as a player coach. The guy is one of the greatest of all time.

Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes!

This is similar to someone saying that Otto Graham is a top 5 QB all-time, then pointing to his 7 Championships as proof.

Weird fact I just learned. Graham played in 1946 for the Rochester Royals as a G/F. They won the NBL title that year. The Royals are now known as the Sacramento Kings..

Everyone in the picture is among the greatest of all time. LOL

That is the point.

To me, this comes down to how you feel about Duncan vs Kobe and Durant vs Curry, and eventually Kobe v Curry. Everyone else clears those 4.

For me, Duncan v Kobe goes to Duncan. TD, imo, is the better player offensive and defensive player collectively and their winning and championship resumes are comparable. Durant v Curry, imo, isn't close. It's Curry easily. KD would need to go on a serious run with Houston to clear. Any ring as a 2nd/3rd best player years later won't cut it. He has to win while being "the guy" to pass Curry.

That leaves KD out and Kobe v Curry, which is difficult. That 2022 ring from Curry made it closer than Kobe fans care to admit. If he retired today, gun to my head, I'm Kobe but that could involve some era bias from me. If Curry gets another, that's a wrap.

Durant, Curry worst 2, for now.

I just like how when it comes to Durant we are supposed to forget that he failed to win a championship with 2 future MVPs on his team in OKC. Then after he ran away to co-lead the Warriors to a couple more rings, he failed trying to put together superteams with many former all stars in both Brooklyn and Phoenix. We are assuming it goes well in Houston. But those are some really huge blemishes on his record. I just can't overlook those stops and failures.

I remember when I read Simmons book when he talked about HOFs and how they rarely ever play for 3 or more teams. Shaq was the one that kind of blew that model away (6 teams). Durant is on his 5th. Almost all of those other guys are just one team. Do you think that's a coincidence?

Not as good anyone else maybe Durant in that pic.

He was inefficient and fueled by rep and cult follownig/market as much as anything.

Great player but not close to top 10.

He won back to back championships with Pau Gasol and Derick Fisher as the next two best players.
Who in that picture won a title with their next 2 best players being worse than those two? And i think Pau Gasol is a great player, but the rest of those guys in that picture won titles with a much better #2 guy, and certainly a better #3.

All 5 of Kobe's titles were won playing with only 1 other hall of famer.
The only other guys to do that were:
Shaq winning 3 with just Kobe
Duncan winning his first one with David Robinson
Lebron winning one with Kryie and Love (Love might not make it)
MJ's first 3 peat with just Pippen

The 2 obvious answers to me are KD and Kareem.
KD's championships are worthless.
Kareem never even made it to the finals unless he was beign propped up by Oscar Robertson with the Bucks and Magic (rookie Magic at that) in LA. He couldn't beat Bill Walton as the lone hall of famer in Portland, or Dennis Johnson and Jack Sikma in Seattle until Magic came along.
Kareem won a title in '74 with big O. Big O retires after that and the Bucks go from 55 wins to 38, and he was still playing with another hall of famer in Bob Dandridge. Kobe lost Shaq and had a worse decline from year to year, but his next best player was Caron Butler, and he followed that down year up with winning 45 games with Lamar Odom, Smush Parker, Chris Mihm and Brian Cook starting with him.

Both Kareem and KD are two of the best individual scorers to ever play the game, but both of them lack championship merits like all of the other guys in that picture.

So true. And shows the lack of concern over the most important thing in basketball. Winning.
