Cross one team off the list the Pelicans will have to battle this year.

quote:

The bigger question here is why San Antonio, coming off of a play-in berth, is so eager to move off of a 25-year-old All-Star. The answer, in all likelihood, is two words: Victor Wembanyama. The French center is the projected No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and is one of the best prospects to enter the NBA in years. A 7-2 center with a steady 3-point shot, ball skills, Rudy Gobert-esque length and impressive mobility, Wembanyama is the sort of player teams frequently sacrifice seasons to draft. Moving Murray would push the Spurs towards a season in the tank, and after landing Tim Duncan in 1997, they know well how valuable such a season can be in the long run.

That kid is going to end up known as Wematanye no matter what he thinks.

That’d be great if we went deep in the playoffs then end up with the #1 pick from the Lakers. I also feel like the team with the worst record rarely gets the top pick. That’s just too big of a gamble when you already have a sure fire Star on the roster. I think Pop might be ready to retire and wants to leave the team in good shape with a generational talent like Wembanyama.

Just seems odd given that the absolute best outcome for this strategy is a 14% chance you can get him.

I would imagine they have done their homework

1. Are the Spurs as currently constructed bad enough to keep acquiring the talent they need to make a legit run?

2. Are they good enough with minor additions to make a run?

They see the west landscape and know they can't win or legitimately compete. They are just good enough to stay in purgatory.

If they are willing to risk the tank regardless of who the crown jewel is they probably think really highly of the top 3-4 prospects and that is worth the tank in their opinion while gaining assets and aiming to compete on a different timeline than GS, Mem, NOLA, Utah, Den etc

Murray is a nice player but he isn't some generational talent in the league.

I think there’s more to the story than just trying to tank.

Murray can’t play off ball because he can’t shoot and he is way too Inefficient to be the lead guard on a good offense. That’s why they wanna get off of him imo. And also to kick the can down the road on rebuild. They aren’t even close to winning.

He is a year younger and totally punked Chet on the court.

We’re in an amazing position where we can genuinely contend for a championship and simultaneously tank for Wembanyama!

Thank you LAL LOL

Spurs are rumored to be going after Ayton. He immediately makes them a playoff team.

He appears to be close to identical height and frame to Chet (who is slouched). I certainly don't see any big delta.

Has an NBA Finals team ever won the Lottery and Championship in the same year?

Celtics drafted Len Bias at #2 after winning the finals.

Lakers got James Worthy at #1 after winning the finals thanks to ole Ted Stepien. Who is the reason why teams can't trade consecutive first rounders.

Spurs have virtually no long term money on the books right now.

They are capable of shipping out Murray, Doug McBuckets, Josh Richardson, Jakob Poetel, and others to get assets or long term contracts which fit their new direction.
