Zach Lowe posted an article this morning detailing Boogie's pending free agency and questions whether or not the Pels need/want him.

Here's the LINK

Some of the highlights:

quote:

The Pelicans have broached internally the idea of offering Cousins a two- or three-year deal at less than the max, per sources familiar with the discussions. I would not expect that to go over well with Cousins' camp. But the Pelicans have the dual leverage of winning without Cousins and a tepid market for him.

quote:

Only a half-dozen or so teams have max-level space this season, and most won't pursue Cousins at that level, sources say. He doesn't make sense for rebuilding teams. Even bad teams hungry for a big jump in wins next season -- say, the Suns -- can't be confident Cousins will be ready to produce at his usual All-Star level until 2019-20, anyway. (Still: Never underestimate Robert Sarver's July 1 exuberance in the name of short-term gain.) Some teams are afraid of his baggage. There may be only two suitors among the cap-room brigade: the Mavericks and the Lakers. And L.A.'s interest is unclear. If the Lakers whiff on LeBron and Paul George, they may want to keep their cap room open for 2019 and beyond -- meaning no fat long-term deal for Cousins.

quote:

The Pelicans and Cousins' camp could then work together to find sign-and-trade options around the rest of the league, but that's not easy, either. The Wizards are the most tempting if they bow out in the first round; Cousins and John Wall are friends, and the Wizards could build an offer around some combination of Otto Porter Jr., Kelly Oubre Jr., Marcin Gortat and a draft pick. But Washington's payroll is so bloated, they may not be allowed under league rules to obtain any player in a sign-and-trade. And given Wall's on-again, off-again knee issues, they may feel queasy committing a ton of money to Wall and Cousins.

quote:

If the Pelicans have to choose between breaking the bank for Cousins over many years and letting him go, they would be right to let him go. They have been that good without him. The alternate path is workable enough.

Agreed. Which is why we will undoubtedly break the bank for him.

I am of the camp that the Pels keep him and sign him to a 2+1 deal. I think they are better with him. Keep Niko and are now able to give multiple looks within a game. Makes for a dangerous team and practically unguardable.

Boogie makes this team more talented.
Boogie has been great for locker room.
Boogie makes AD happy.
Boogie is a big body to be stout under rim.
Boogie allows Niko great minutes as a 6th man role.
Boogie is a great passer with our shooters spread everywhere.
Boogie can score from anywhere on court.

Bring him back. Why the frick would we trade away 2 firsts to use him for half a year. frick that. Give him a 2 year deal with a player option for year 3.

I think a 2 or 3 year deal works for both parties

Pels get a shorter investment on a fairly big risk (big guy coming back from an achilles)

Boogie gets paid and sets himself up for another fat deal in a couple years if he comes back at full strength or close to it

We’ve found a formula that not only works, but works amazingly well. AD is a lab-created Center in today’s NBA. He’s similar to young Dwight except he’s got the perfect offensive game for a 2018 big man.

I like Boogie. I think he’s a great player and he carried us through a number of games this year. That said, I struggle to see where he fits in the current scheme, and I’d rather not see them go back to the high low stuff they had before that diminishes Jrue and Rondo.

If he can recover fully it is a no doubter. The idea that he may never be the same again is what scares me off. Not the fit or how good this team is with him. We are our best with a healthy boogie.

1. This sunk cost fallacy is a terrible way to manage your team.

2. What if he says no to your 2+1 and demand 4-5?

give me the wizards trade in a heartbeat. No possible way he just walks. At worst it will be a sign and trade, because he can get more money and the team that gets him can get him for 1 more year.

I would not give him a 5 year max. I'm pursuing S&Ts at that point.

A 3+1 is probably the best I would do.

Neither would I, but, despite these sources Lowe is listing, I’m going to have to wait and see how this leverage the Pels have over Boogie shakes out. Dell has had leverage before and I can’t think of a time he’s ever actually used it.

These let Boogie walk hot takes are so short sided. We matched up well against the Blazers, but could have easily just have had the Jazz or Rockets and all this let Boogie walk talk wouldn’t be happening.

What does AD want to do?

Whatever that answer is should be what we do. I can live with cousins on our team if it means AD signs another contract with us.

Anyone wanting to let boogie walk must be fine with pissing off AD and Rondo and never making it past the first round.

A 5 year max would be an extremely tough pill to swallow, regardless of what AD wants. At that point you have to attempt to sell him on an alternative path.

If you can't maybe you have to bite the bullet.

I vaguely remember Chris Paul or David West talking about their turning point on when they wanted to leave New Orleans. One of them said it was when we Traded Chandler. I can see that having a similar effect with AD and Cousins. I think you have to keep Cousins at all cost.

I don’t want him to walk but do you really offer max money to a guy who just tore his Achilles and whom you won without?

In a perfect world, he takes big money but not max money so we can still maneuver around the tax threshold.

In real life, you try to explain to him that without major cap maneuvering, we can’t pay him the max AND keep his buddy Rondo who has been instrumental to our success.

I feel his case for bringing him back is stronger than not

quote:

All this has presented New Orleans with what looks like an obvious roadmap: Let Cousins walk, re-sign Mirotic to a more reasonable number after next season, and use draft picks and the midlevel exception to stock the roster with wings. With so many teams capped out, the midlevel is powerful again. It could net Danny Green or Will Barton this summer, and perhaps an equivalent player in the next one. Then, cycle through minimum-salary centers who can bang, and sop up minutes.

meh

sounds like the debate is not IF you bring him back, but for how much and how long

They just swept the 3 seed in the first round, which is why we're having the conversation in the first place.
