Lonzo Getting Shut Down For The Season

The Chicago Bulls are expected to shut down guard Lonzo Ball for the remainder of the season, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Pain and discomfort have persisted in Ball’s left knee following two surgeries at the beginning and end of 2022.
He's played 35 games in 2 years for the Bulls. I know you can't really predict injury, but can you imagine if the Pels had resigned him with the other injuries we've had? A 1st and 4 2nds for Graham was still an expensive mistake, but it definitely could have been worse.

It would have been very very bad in here.

Feel bad for Lonzo. That sucks.

It's not just Lonzo either, it's actually rather remarkable how many bullets this franchise dodged that offseason through sheer managerial failure and luck.
The luck of walking away from Lonzo due to a price we didn't want to pay, trying to godfather offer Lowry instead, then Hardaway, then Dinwiddie, failing at all three.
Pretty sure had any of those happened this franchise would be in a very different place right now. Griff would likely have been fired, BI/Zion likely plotting exit strategies, and the team camaraderie would be a team of bitterness and frustration. Likely no way to get CJ and we'd have had to give up major assets to get off the bad contracts.

I'm going to assume the Bulls are looking to cash an insurance policy at this point.

You tried to warn everyone that Lonzo would develop a degenerative knee condition?

How is that luck? That's properly valuing an injured player that wanted way more than what he was worth. You're not wrong about the other things, but letting Lonzo go was a smart move.
Now what we got for him on the other hand is a different conversation.

You are worth what the market will pay, and the market payed Lonzo what he was asking from us.
The luck comes in that had Lonzo and Klutch been more accommodating, we were willing to go close to his number but not all the way. But at this point any significant number would have dragged this franchise down. Cause, unfortunately for him, Lonzo's career may never recover and he may never play again.

I’m still pissed Griff not once but twice had the chance to get Lauri for Ball and passed. Zions injuries wouldn’t hurt nearly as bad with him on the roster. I pointed this out a few times in the Ball threads.

Yeah, Griff and his valuation of big men and big men as part of a roster is still probably his weakest aspect of being a GM. Other than being gifted Kevin Love and Zion, he ranges from at best solid but flawed(Jonas, Nance, Thompson: who he wanted to not pay til Lebron forced his hand) to WTF(Bennett, Mozgov).
It's a pattern of head-scratching decisions around big men going back most of his career.

And Zion has played 29 for the Pels. Ugh

I forgot he was still in the league

But...I don't think there's any chance whatsoever that Lauri is anywhere near what he is now if he was on our team. He'd much more likely still be Chicago/Cleveland Lauri and not Utah Lauri if he were a Pel just due to what his role would be.

Wouldn’t matter. He was still very gifted offensively. And like I said at the time, 3pointers were and still are a team weakness. He definitely would have helped in that regard.
And Lauri looked very good his first couple years in Chicago. Not sure what happened near the end of his time there.

I certainly agree that he'd help us, but more in a 15 and 5 way and less of a 25 and 9 kind of a way.

We have our future at PG in Dyson Daniels so I’m glad we moved on from Ball. Still wish him well. You never want a guy to get hurt and this is obviously a possible career ender. Ball’s knee is degenerative. Reminds me a bit of Brandon Roy with Portland several years ago. Just when he was coming into his own and became a star he hurt his knee and his career was basically finished even though he tried many comebacks and played a few games here and there but he was a different player completely. Roy had a much higher ceiling than Lonzo but he still started to show flashes of being a good 3 pt shooter as well as a passer.

Exactly. Other than this season, he has basically been a 15 & 5 guy. He's in a great system for his game with a coach that is an excellent X's & O's coach. Good for him for the season he is having so far, but that's not the guy he's been his entire career up until this point.
