Chris Connor was able to get Larry to talk for an hour and a half last night. Kinda shed some light on a few things that the team is going through. Such as:

Why Dyson/Kira don’t get more time
The meteoric fall down the rankings
The training staff

And more.

For anyone trying to listen, it doesn't start until like 9 minutes in. I was trying to listen and had no idea wtf was going on. It was just silent.

On offensive struggles:
"We really only have one shooter (Trey)."

"We have three guys that want to be in that 15-17 foot range. We all want to operate in the same area. You tend to get in each other's way a bit."

So roster construction...

"We're frustrated too. It's not something we don't know." Regarding the spacing.

Said it's hard with injuries and no practice time.

I'll add more as I listen.

On Dyson and roster overlap:

"Basically said Dyson takes away spacing because teams don't guard him on the perimeter. We got dogs defensively but it creates a lack of spacing because they do a lot of the same things well."

Larry basically is echoing what we're all saying.

On D'Antoni:

He doesn't interact with the players. Shows up on the road occasionally. Sounds like he's not a major contributor (my interpretation). Larry said he assumes he talks to the coaches more.

On vibe of team:

"Inside the walls, there was never a lack of belief during losing streaks. No finger pointing, blaming, head dropping. This taem is not going to quit. Belief is there."

They are definitely not in tank mode. They think they're right there in the mix, everyone in the middle of the pack is struggling to some degree.

They don't want to be in the play-in.

On Pels losing history:

They don't care or focus on that. Perception of team has changed within league - serious talent on the team.

Sees us similar to the Cavs right now. Young talent. He said the injuries are the difference.

Still a team no one wants to play in the playoffs.

(Eddie Johnson said this yesterday on NBA Radio too. Said with a healthy Zion, forget the current struggles, Pels are a team no one wants in the playoffs.)

Balancing development with winning:

Said it's tough to balance that. Lots of stuff developmentally going on behind the scenes with young guys.

Kira is super talented, but who's minutes does he take?

Chemistry vs Talent:

Awesome human beings in locker room. No one draining energy.

More talent than most teams on the roster.

Thinks J Rich fits the mold of team and was a smart move money wise.

Said Chicago pushed chips in and whiffed. Mortgaged future assets and now are stuck.

When healthy, Pels were No. 1. See if we can get healthy and what happens. Give roster a chance to fail.

On injuries and training staff:

For him, put weight on core, hamstrings to protect knees. Got bounce back.

Said he's "thrilled" with training staff. Very pleased with caliber of treatment.

Different bodies respond to different things differently.

On FA destinations:

Good team, good culture makes places a destination.

He and CJ were brought in to change perception of org.

What do we hang our hat on:

We want to be the team you hate playing against. We got away from that in the losing streak. Pesky.

Window to win a title:

Draft picks we have coming up - we can go get almost any player we want. Embarrassment of riches. Our window is a lot larger than most teams.

Very few if any teams have our talent and draft capital.

Holding teammates accountable:

One of our major issues is giving up offensive rebounds. I get switched onto Gs and shot goes up with a little on a big. An adjustment we make is to keep me out of switching so i can rebound. In the Raptors game, I would go contest a shot to protect the rim and since we're not used to that no one was blocking out his big. That happened a few times. Willie pulled me and said that's not working.

Going forward, I watched that tape and make sure that doesn't happen again.

(He said something so telling. We're not used to someone trying to block shots and rim protect. Again, what we already know. Jonas is a sieve defensively and provides zero rim protection. Sadly, Larry basically said he shouldn't block shots because we can't box out bigs when he does.)

On Matchups:

When healthy, they're not afraid of anyone. Bucks and Celtics two best teams in league.

On Zion:

Can fit into spaces and can jump through traps.

On EJ:

Reminds him a little of Grant Williams. Gonna be in the league quite a while.

On Murphy:

Ceiling is so high. Talent to be top end player. Trying to teach him to play the right way.

Transition D and Boxing Out:

Good on transition D, bad at boxing out. Wings are young. We don't do things we should do.

I listened to it live about halfway thru, then went back and listened to beginning. Larry gained a ton of respect in my book. That spaces is toxic as fk after alot of games but hilarious; for a player to go on there is pretty crazy.

It was funny when they asked him about training staff; he said he loved them, he was in the best shape since being younger going into this season working with them and adding muscle in his legs to support his knees, added 20 lbs or so. But he also said, slight paraphrase, " I can't speak for anyone else, and other people might feel differently, but others are definitely still working every day and fully invested in getting back to the court, and I'll leave it at that."

Talked about pelicans perception 5 years ago vs now, says winning is all that matters to players outside the LA teams and NY teams.

It was a loooong time to be answering questions.

People also love to hear themselves talk is another thing I learned, questioners would just ramble and never let Larry actually answer the damn question, at the end chris started just cutting people off, it's definitely a good listen all in all though.

Yeah its always kinda the same 7 or 8 people that get to ask questions and some of them arent the best speakers so you kinda have to take the good with the bad.

It's modern talk radio, and sadly it hasn't evolved one bit.

Whatever happened to the people on here that said our shooting situation is fine back when we were in first place?

I had my phone on speaker because the wife was wanting to listen too and numerous times we were like just get the fang question out.

I get it, none of them are reporters so it's not like they should be good at asking a pro athlete questions, but ok let's avoid every single person telling him to get to feeling better, thanking him for doing this, and thanking him for his work in the community before you even start your 3 minute long question.

I don't think anyone was ever against adding more shooting. Coming into the season I thought the shooting would be fine before CJ injured his shooting hand twice and JV/Herb regressed rather than improved. But even believing that I always said we needed to replace Graham and Jaxson with players that actually were who those 2 were supposed to be, which meant adding another shooter.

So to paraphrase he said JV is pretty worthless on defense?

There were definitely people who said "Our shooting is fine, look, we're in first place" anytime it was brought up that, even while we were having success, shooting was a glaring need.

I mean you can read into what he said that way I guess. I don't think he was dogging Jonas as much as just stating the fact that he's the only rim protector on the team and the other guys are not used to playing with someone challenging shots.

Thus they get caught out of position and don't box out.

I think there were four takeaways from this and none earth-shattering.

1. The team does not appear to have a locker room issue and still is confident. They believe their troubles are injury related.
2. There is overlap. Too many non-shooting wings and too many guys that want the ball in the midrange. He mentioned CJ, BI and Jonas.
3. Team doesn't have rim protection outside of him.
4. He thinks training staff is fine.

I think we're going to see at least one of Naji, Herb or Dyson moved. My money would be on Naji but an outside chance of Herb if he doesn't show out the rest of the year.

Val is a goner. Willie doesn't believe in him. He crowds where CJ and BI want to be and he doesn't provide rim protection.

Nance is basically saying we're in need of a wing like Hart.

Nance was definitely questioning the ability(or desire) of our other guys to box out and rebound. That’s partially in part to us not having a PF for some damn reason, and the rest because, well, nothing good. It’s definitely hurting our ability to even try to contest at the rim. Overall we have effort issues which I really didn’t think we would be saying with this group.

I think it's because it's something they're not used to doing. No excuse but we're asking guys like Trey, Naji, Herb to box out Cs.
