Just listened to the most recent JJ Redick podcast from Wednesday. The guest asked JJ if he’s ever had a mentor in basketball and if he’s ever had guys who want JJ to mentor them.

He mentioned Rashard Lewis as a guy that helped him a lot as a younger player and more importantly mentioned that NAW has been adamant about following him around, asking for advice, and mimicking his workouts.

Guest asked if it got annoying and JJ said definitely not and that it was actually pretty cool and he was happy to serve in that role and that he wishes more players would look to him for advice.

He went on to talk about how mentoring younger players isn’t common in the NBA anymore because so many guys are more worried about their pregame outfits and social media than winning games.

It’s a really good listen overall and I just thought it was awesome to hear about NAW’s great work ethic and his desire to be great. Listening to this plus watching him ball last night has me even more excited to watch him develop.

Also SIAP. I searched a few pages back and didn’t see anything.

It should be mandatory for all players on the Pelicans to pick JJ, Jrue or Favors as their official mentor. These guys are what is right with a team.

His defense will be his biggest obstacle to getting starting level minutes IMO. He gets caught flatfooted too much. I think his offense will continue to grow rather quickly though. Enough for him to be the guy to run the second unit by next year. Year 3-4 is when I would expect him to make a jump.

Whatever JJ’s doing has been working. NAW looked like a train wreck the first dozen or so regular season games. He’s taken a huge step in his development lately. He’s really playing nice right now.

This was my biggest hopper for NAW. If nothing else just learning shot mechanics and the importance of making it look exactly the same every time from JJ. Kid is already a gifted scorer. This could really help unlock his offensive potential!

The defense I think will be fine eventually. He seems to care too much to stay bad at it.

David Fisher tweet:

Over the last 6 games since being reinserted in the rotation NAW is averaging 15.1 points, 6.1 assists, and 5.1 rebounds per 36 minutes while shooting 37.5% behind the arc.

JJ Redick is low key the most important guy on this roster.

This is still just as dumb an idea as the last time you suggested it.

It was a jab at Gentry in jest. We need a fricking coach. JJ seems to be coaching these kids more than our real coach.

I remember when that JJ quote was going around and everyone was guessing as to which Pel he was talking about with the "pregame fit over winning games" line and bashing the team and it turns out that lo and behold, in context, it was a compliment to our team.

The way Zo is progressing, imagine NAW at the 2, dropping wet arse 3s like JJ.

Right. All the growth that we're seeing in the skills of Ingram, Ball, NAW, and Hayes -- it's all due to Redick and not the coaching staff. Got it.

Redick is such a poor choice for a veteran presence. Dude is the definition of a 1 trick pony. All he can do is shoot. He’s a liability on defense and he offers nothing but floor spacing if he’s not shooting

I don’t see why many players would want him as a mentor unless they want to focus on shooting better. He overestimates his worth

Jesus christ there's some horrible fricking takes after what was a great fricking game that we shot ourselves in the foot

Apparently Redick mentoring NAW is working seeing as how he's been giving some great minutes lately
