Dyson is such a high floor player. Im not gonna say he cant bust but even if his shot doesnt come along he gives great defense, passing, and BBIQ

Naji like Temple will not being getting minutes in the regular season. Whatever minuscule minutes he played last season will continue to go down as Willie will be scraping the bottom of the barrel to find time for Daniels.

The advanced stats last year from Temple were among the worst I have ever seen. They were the worst in the league for someone getting his minutes. Willie had to know.

Kudos to him for making the change though.

Willie had to grow up and learn too. It was probably hard for him to essentially end Garrett Temple's playing career, but in the end as head coach you have to do what's best for the team. Hopefully next time it will be easier for Willie to make the right decision sooner.

Hiring the new assistant coach of stats will probably help with that kind of decision making too.

He was a little stubborn with Trey during the year as well. He trusted him at the end of the season when he was playing his best, but it took some time.

Trey went from unplayable to the guy we drafted, maybe even better. Fans always want these guys to play but it’s hard to argue he wasn’t handled correctly

this
they had to play last year because we didnt have better players (early). now we do

only reason we are talking about them today is that they played in a preseason game last nite with two primary players held out

The problem was that Temple was THAT much of a negative.

Its hard to argue that Trey couldn't play just a couple of weeks earlier and be better or the same.

But the right decision was eventually made. Trey has turned out well.

I think people are just having PTSD at seeing Temple get minutes last night. And we like what we saw from Dyson.

People were melting over Point Naji in Summer League as if that was the plan for the regular season. It really is PTSD because for so many years we've seen coach after coach play the familiar vet over the rookie who doesn't know what he's doing.

Except Willie Green played 3 rookies, one who was undrafted, heavy minutes in the playoffs. If that doesn't tell you things are different nothing will.

The point guard leading the second team to start the season is a nice competition.

Prospects: Kira, Dyson, Jose

If Kira is healthy I think he’ll lead the team in this role this season.

Dyson feels ready now and I think he’ll contribute more as a basketball player fulfilling many roles this year. Our new Swiss Army Knife.

Jose has a stronghold on this role going into the season. I don’t know if he’s as talented as the other two but he ultimately makes the room deeper.

The season starts in two weeks and Kira may not be ready to go live before the season starts so I’m projecting a lot on him.

The only one that is a little imbalanced is Jose/Dyson due to the lack of shooting

That’s when they share the court with Trey Hayes and Nance/Val!

I agree jose has that on lock. He was awesome last night. the stats dont show his impact enough. every time he stepped on the court we went on a run.

Jose is one of best glue guys of the team but Daniels is physically better.

Willie gave Trey an opportunity early. His defensive instincts that were drilled into him during college worked against what the team was asking him to do. The game was too fast, the floor was too big and he needed to sit.

Trey is great example of growth not being linear. His talent was evident but needed to be nurtured. This year he’ll be subbing out BI like “whaddup twin”

I really love Willie as a head coach but it’s hard to give him kudos for eventually making a change that was obvious to the casual observer for some time.

Naji shouldn’t be on the team if we are talking about both abilities and potential.

and he won't be once one of the younger guys who isn't on the roster yet surpasses him, Plowden or Butler or Seabron. I don't expect that to happen this year. And it might not even happen this offseason. Naji isn't terrible, and he's a great guy to have as the 13th/14th guy.
I'm not going to put much stock into the 13-15th guy, as long as we are still developing young guys and have two way guys in the waiting, which is what we've done the last 3 years.

Sammy Gelfand is a game changer to the coaching staff IMO. I think his relationship/ experience with Willie will also help Willie think less about the tough decisions he has to make.

I don’t think a Jose/ Dyson lineup is that bad. Their defense already negates the offensive issues and I’m pretty confident that Jose will be a positive offensive asset this year. I also think DDs shot will fall and the game will obviously slow down.

Jose
DD
BI- offense/ Herb Defense
Nance- BI in/ Trey- Herb in
Val/ Zion/ Hayes

The one I'd like to see is:

Jose
DD
BI
Trey
Val/Zion/Hayes

Contrast Jose/DD's lack of consistent shooters with the offensive firepower of BI/Trey/Val or Zion. Jax too if his improvement is not a mirage

Of course the ultimate moral of this story is we have an almost endless array of ways we can match up or find disadvantages to exploit on a given night. Which is why I still think, it healthy, we will be in the running for a top 3 seed. We have all the makings, talent, and circumstance(young hungry team) to go out and win 55 games.

I am slightly worried defensively if we have BI/ Zion/ Trey in there together. Feel like 1 of Herb or Nance need to be in that lineup.

Unless we roll with

Jose/ DD
BI
Herb
Trey
Zion

I thought Zion looked pretty good defensively last night.
He's still too upright when defending 1 on 1, but as an off ball defender he looked alert and in the right place.

None of those 3 guys are bad defensively, they just aren't that good. Having a 5 in the lineup that can help protect the rim with them would be key.
