How exactly do we get better on defense?

With this roster and Alvin, I just don't see it

This was a winnable game, even without Ingram.

Basically if we aren't always on fire on offense, the other team gets an 8-0 run.

Having a coach that gives a shite about it would likely help.

When you basically have an offensive coordinator as your coach this is expected.

GalanTi was just too good tonight and there were a couple of missed asignments( or it looked like it)

Better coach. We’ve never had a good defense under Gentry. I don’t think Gentry has ever head coached a team with a respectable defense

Favors has regressed a lot since that 7-8 game stretch where he anchored the defense. He plays like he's 45 years old now. We get absolutely wrecked on PnR because our big men are either smart and slow (favors) or athletic and dumb (Hayes and Zion). Crazy that our best defensive bigman seems to be Melli at this point

Instead of saying dumb, I would rather say, "unaware."

A lot of really sad takes in this thread.

They were a top 10 defense in 16/17 and played top 10 defense post Boogie in 17/18. Since Favors came back on 12/13, they've been the 13th best defense in the league (they're also 17-13). With Zion playing the last 10, they're the #6 defense.

We just watched them shut down arguably the hottest player in the league and a better offense on Tuesday night.

Thunder had their number last night, especially in the first half. It sucks, but it happens. Defense was better in the 4th quarter. They're also missing Ingram.

To answer the OP: time and reps for communication/trust. The non-Favors bigs are just leaky right now and will be exposed at times. That happens with rookie bigs.

ive gotten use to the lazy takes lol

what changed from us being better defensively last season was 1) we lost a perennial DPOY candidate in AD, 2) have 5 of 15 players that returned from last season's roster (Jrue & Moore are the only 2 of those 5 getting consistent minutes), & 3) replaced Erman w/Bzdelik

as much as everyone loves talking about Gentry, he's not the answer here. we struggled in a big way defensively at the beginning of the year. players suggested a different scheme & they began playing better. that's on Bzdelik imo.

but also no matter what the scheme has been, we simply have poor individual defenders on this team esp when it comes to defending the wing position (see Gallo last night). we are top 5 (or very close to top 5) in ppg allowed and have been there all season

In what metric we talking about? Genuinely curious because I don't think I can remember a game where we held our opponent to under 100. We also give up entirely too many offensive rebounds.

If BI was healthy, DGali would have been more challenged on shots but overall letting a team shoot 50 and 48 from 3 is unacceptable.

Good luck holding a modern NBA team under 100. 13/15 of the western conference teams score 110+ PPG

I don't have the answers but I do know if the defense was a little better and they took care of the ball a little better, this team could really be something.

I don't even mean elite D or ball protection, just decent.

I know that's not breaking news or deep insight, it's just crazy that those two aspects, which are very fixable things, are the two things that will probably be what bites them in the arse at the end of the season.

ETA: well I see they are decent compared to the rest of the league in turnovers. Just seems like so many. Guess the timing of the TOs hurts most.

Going by the 110 metric we have only held 15 teams under 110, and about half of those were still L's.

I refuse to believe we are a "good defensive team" by any metric. Which is fine most nights because we can usually blink and score 120, but if we want a top 4 seed next year and a serious run, we have to get better on that half of the court.

Galo went off down the stretch. kept taking advantage of mismatches.

I would like 1 galo for next year please.

Offense isnt our problem though that's the thing. We got all we need on offense. Cant stop teams from scoring 118 a game on average. Thats the problem. Pels have to be shite hot on offense for even a chance to win every night. They make it so hard on themselves.

Corn, i have seen you defend Gent a few times, with cogent responses.

What would you say Al does good as a coach? What evidence would u cite to support him being a top 10 coach, if any?

This. Gentry is basically the NBA version of Mike Martz.
