Did Derrick White’s mother decide who makes it? How is he all defense over Herb?

Rather have Herb jones, jaden mcdaniels, Mikal bridges, Lu Dort, Giannis, AD over a few of these guys. Ridiculous.

He did struggle a bit in the first half of the season. At least not up to his standard

Herb is a no brainer selection over White and Caruso.

ETA: Along with last year's snub, this will actually help the Pels retain him. Silver linings...

This is what happens when the media votes instead of coaches and players.

Wow, what an awful omission. Another example of the lack of respect the Pels are having to eat all off-season. However, this has to light a fire under the team's azz. Their internal assessment of the team is not going to match the National narrative until they prove it.

Agreed. What does the media really know about how a player defends? Ask the other players and coaches.

He has a better argument over Dillon Brooks. You could argue the Grizzlies were a better defensive team whenever he was off the court. I’m not sure how a guy with a negative DBPM should ever get on an all defensive team. That guy is an extremely overrated defender and still fouls too much.

He also has probably a better argument than Caruso, who only played 1500 minutes this year (for reference Herb played 1900). White played almost 800 more minutes than Caruso.

He didn’t deserve it this year. He was extremely sloppy for the first half of the season. There were multiple threads from multiple posters highlighting that. Dyson was honestly the better defender for at least the first half of the season.

Although, if Zion played more than 29 games, we naturally would’ve been in the running for more of these awards.

So this is another thing we can blame Zion on tbh. Impacting Herb Jones legacy bc he’d rather eat little Debbie cakes all day than be great.

Those that have been fairly in tune with the NBA as a whole this season can tell you that both Caruso and Derrick White have been fantastic defenders all season long.

I consider myself to be a big Herb Stan, but for the 1st half of the season, Herb wasn't passing the All-Nba defense candidate eye test. He just wasn't elite like last season. He turned it on the final 3rd of the season but his first 2/3rds were not up to the standard we are accustomed to.

RAPTOR ratings for Defensive Raptor

Guards:

1) Alex Caruso
2) Herbert Jones

3) Dennis Smith, Jr.
4) Delon Wright
5) John Konchar
6) Jalen Suggs
7) Josh Okogie
8) Luguentz Dort
9) Immanuel Quickley
10) Matisse Thybulle
11) Derrick White

Edit: if I drop the minutes required to qualify down to 1000, then Dyson would have finished 7th in Defensive Raptor.

Who gives a shite? These teams are all popularity contests. We know what Herb brings night in and night out and so does the league.

Herb definitely struggled the 1st half of the season...on offense..and EVEN on defense. Came on VERY strong on both ends of the court during the 2nd half of the 66 games that he played last year.

I may be making excuses for Herb...but actually, there are others who know far more than I do about Herb...that apparently think that 4 stints on the IL, all during the 1st half of the season for various problems...might have affected Herb's 1st half performance.

Start of season:
Played 3 games then out 4 on IL (Knee)
Played 14 games then out 5 on IL (Ankle)
Played 6 games then out 3 on IL (Covid)
Played 6 games then out 4 on IL (Back)

All the above happened in the 1st half of Herb's season...he didn't miss a game in the final half of his season and played MUCH, MUCH better on BOTH ends of the court. Some might think that's a "reason" for Herb's performance last year...while others might think that's an "excuse", for his relatively poor, 1st half performance.

Either way, I agree with you, Herb should NOT have been 1st or 2nd All-Defensive Team this past season. The award is for the whole season, NOT just the 2nd half.

Good call on the injuries. I forgot about those and I think he got dinged either in preseason or really early in the year.

My main complaint on Herb’s D is usually his penchant for unnecessary fouls and biting on pump fakes.

He is remarkable when he plays a bit more disciplined and marries it with the rest of his defensive bag.

Sucks for Herb but him not having these on his resume only helps the Pels chances of re-signing him

Point taken, but he's actually toned the over-aggressive style down a bit from his college days. Absolutely STAYED in foul trouble back in those days.

My main concern is Daniels. I know he's young but I fully expected him to show SOME improvement over the course of the season...he didn't...at least not in my opinion. IMO...Dyson will be a vital cog for the Pels in that his defense will allow Herb to float back & forth between guarding the other teams best offensive threat AND to keep from risking foul trouble...fall back to his off-ball defense and turn the heavy lifting one-on-one stuff to Dyson on occasion. Many think Herb's off-ball help defense is just a valuable as his on-ball defense...and I agree with them.

Bottom line...Dyson can make Herb an EVEN better & more effective defensive player...and playing with Herb, will only make Dyson learn to develope into the VERY good defensive player I think he can become. We need TWO big time defenders...and I think we may have them, in this pair.

3 centers on the first team?? Jaren Jackson jr basically a center even though he plays power forward sometimes. Herb should have been on one of those teams though. They should have a 3rd team, I'm surprised I didn't see Embiid's name somewhere. Lol
