Pick ATS:
Pelicans (+1.5)

Pick OU:
Under (212.5)

Prediction:
Pelicans 106 Raptors 97

PELICANS

quote:

New Pelicans head coach Stan Van Gundy is known for his emphasis on defense and discipline. Another key offseason acquisition helps both of those things, as well, is center Steven Adams, who instantly gives the Pelicans an “enforcer” and makes them a more imposing frontcourt. His ability to protect the rim and rebound the ball has been a great complement to sophomore sensation Zion Williamson.

The young Pelicans have responded positively and entered Friday ranked fourth in Defensive Rating (101.0), per NBA Advanced Stats. They have good size in the backcourt in Lonzo Ball and Eric Bledsoe, which bodes well in guarding Toronto’s starting guard pairing of Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet.

RAPTORS

quote:

The Raptors look like a completely different team than the team that finished last season second in the Eastern Conference at 53-19. Due to travel restrictions placed by the Canadian federal government, the Raptors are currently playing their home games in Tampa.

This could be one reason for the slow start. During the offseason, the Raptors lost two starters in the frontcourt in Serge Ibaka and Marc Gasol, both of whom provided veteran leadership and a strong defensive presence. Toronto brought in Aron Baynes, a tough center that can shoot 3-pointers, to help fill the void. Last season with Phoenix, Baynes averaged four 3-point attempts per game and shot 35.1% from behind the arc. Like the Raptors as a team, he’s not off to the best start to this season.

Siakam sat out the Raps' last game as a disciplinary measure. I really don't know what to make of that, and I have no idea how he'll respond.

For us, it certainly seemed bad at the time that BI got ejected and Zion got into foul trouble, but it now seems like a blessing that they got some rest, and we should get over 35 minutes out of both of them.

Also, a lot of the success last game came from Bledsoe, Lonzo and NAW attacking the basket. OKC is a rebuilding team with no rim protection and Zion played limited minutes which probably opened up the paint. Will the guards be able to attack as much with Zion playing big minutes, or will we go back to Zion and Ingram being 90% of the offense?

Our guards seem more passive in our losses and far more aggressive in our wins. Bledsoe looked like a monster game 1 and disappeared for a minute. I think he likes playing this team. Big night for him.

Should be another good game. Toronto is currently 6th in pace, 2nd in defensive efficiency, and last in offensive efficiency. They shoot 34% from 3, so hopefully they go cold against us again. Lowry, VanVleet, and Boucher are playing well. Siakam, Powell, and Baynes not so much. In 85 minutes, Baynes is 3/14 from 3 and has inexplicably not registered a single FTA, block, or steal. This was a guy who I thought would be a great fit on the Pels, so it will be interesting to see if he picks it up or if last year in Phoenix was a mirage.

It’s boring to say this game will likely hinge on how well Toronto shoots the 3, but I have a feeling a lot of our games this year will boil down to that.

yup

also there are some really bad teams this year and we’ve only played one of them (OKC). The pels should be able to easily choke down the bad teams and stay competitive against the good ones. Stay the course

Also we have to remember that we played 4 of our first 5 on the road. We are home for the next 4 games, let's rack up some home Ws

That’s all I ask this season. Beat the teams we are supposed to, be competitive against the good teams, and steal a win here if there. That’s huge growth for us.

honestly just that part is major progress
and if you just do that you’re pretty much .500

If we are .500, I’m happy. That will allow us to figure out the finishing pieces and the polish to make a push. Suite game finna be lit!

10 in a game is a lot for Lonzo. He averaged 5.8 last season and so far this season just 4.8. By comparison Jrue averaged 14.9 last season.

I thought that's the way he was leaning with it. Definitely need all of our guards to keep driving. Not everything needs to be a pass or a 3 off of a pick.

Yea, if Lonzo averaged 10 drives per game, he would be immensely better than he is now. But he averages half that, and from what Shamit said on Twitter, it's extremely rare he gets to 10.

Promising that he did it last game but obviously just 1 game. Would love to see him change it up and continue to be on the attack.
