I mean, he also claims Melli is one of his favorite players in the league, basically because he played his one good game of the year against the Celts. I wouldn't take anything Bill says too seriously.

I hate to break it to the SVG haters but our struggles are 85% the roster. Not him. Too many who are lazy and dumb

Bill Simmons doesn't watch the NBA anymore. Couldn't give a frick what his opinion is.

i'm honestly not sure how to approach this team...

first off, you have the "we're in New Orleans so who gives a frick" issue..

then you have a team with Zion, who appears to give 90-100% effort every night.. along side guys like BI and Bledsoe, who seem to give their best effort when they're matched up against another big market team or big name star...

I'm not jealous of Griffin's job here.. You have to sell these primadonnas on playing in pretty crummy basketball town, while also asking them to buy in and give max effort because this market will never draw a bunch of bought out and vet min players

Must really hurt him for SVG to be 2-0 vs the Celtics

Nico Melli is so damn bad, I just looked up his stats for a laugh. 6 points in his last 51 minutes of basketball. 29.9% Fg on the year, wow

I mean, he said Melli was one of his “favorites”. That’s not the same thing as calling someone good lol.

Saying SVG is the worst coach in the league is not even that much of a hot take. On the other hand, If he said the opposite, that take would possibly be the hottest take of all time.

I've seen little to convince me he's not one of the worst - and he's still clearly better than AG - FWIW.

It’s a dumb take and SVG’s response was perfect.

Even Simmons couldn’t maintain his hot take 30 seconds after he said it and began waffling.

It reminds me again of all the dumb commentators calling Thibs washed because he couldn’t get Wiggins and KAT to give a frick on defense. That even Jimmy Butler, once a big proponent, was looking to get out as fast as he could. Or how Frank Vogel was once considered a relic and the worst possible coach for Orlando. Proof positive Orlando didn’t have a clue. LA made a huge mistake and should have gotten Lue.

Fact is coaching matters but it matters less in the NBA than any sport and any time I hear someone try to shuffle most of the blame on a coach for a teams problems I immediately put them in the category of the low IQ reactionary fan.

I mean does anyone with a working brain think that if we had CP3 instead of Bledsoe that this team wouldn’t be a top 5 seed this season? Before NAW, Hart, and Lonzo all got hurt, this team was beginning to roll. But this team has lacked a playmaking guard, spacing, and a true lockdown defender all season. Adams is who some of us thought he was but many wanted to believe differently and the vets we brought in were all career role players that learned to defer to stars as their leaders, not be one.

Sports media is driven by signal boosting each other’s most inflammatory and controversial takes, incentivizing the increased perpetuation of the behavior, Simmons knows this, I wish more people wouldn’t fall for it.

Everyone you said is spot on.

This team has many holes.

I don't think stan is some great coach but i dont think he is the worst either.
Next year will tell us what we need to know.

If things go bad next year he is gone.

I agree with Simmons, specifically on how bad SVG is at end of games. Just give the ball to Zion and get the frick out of the way. In every game we blow a lead late, Stan forgets that Zion exists.

Next year is going to write the story, barring some sort of catastrophic injury scenario(which lets be honest, has like a 65% probability of happening given our cursed history).

At the same time, Griff and Langdon need to step up. To me this offseason will be as big or a bigger indictment of them.

The roster around BI and Zion has to get more complimentary. We need another playmaking guard(maybe NAW, maybe Kira, but either way we probably need a vet as well), we need shooters, and we ideally need a 4/3 defensive stopper that can space.

It’s a lot of holes to fill and guys we need to get out of to fill them, which also speaks to how Griff has so far mismanaged aspects of the roster to this point.

there's a saying that coaching in the nba is 15% about the x's and o's. the rest is simply motivating and managing personnel.

Sometimes a guy just sucks at that, and the team lacks the effort most nights
Sometimes a guy does something, or continues to do things that rub guys the wrong way and eventually leads to the team no longer believing in him or wanting to play hard for him.
Sometimes the player personnel just sucks.

I know our roster isn't some world beater, and we have glaring holes, but i know Zion isn't an "i'm not going to try hard" kind of guy. Based on everything you read about BI's offseasons, he doesn't seem like that guy either. Both of their play on the court at times tells you different. We have guys like Hart and Adams (and Redick) who were there to make sure the effort level was up, and pushed others to do so, so it's not like we didn't have some veteran voices to get people to try hard.

I simply think this team doesn't relate to SVG. They don't listen to him, and they don't care about doing what he says b/c they don't believe it will work. I think they gave it their best, it hasnt' worked, they don't like it, they don't believe in it, and that has all made the effort on the court reflect that at times.

The Hawks were sitting at a 112.5 defensive rating this year before firing their coach. Good for 22nd in the league.
Since they fired him, they have the 11th best defense at 110.7
Their offensive rating went from 112.7 to 115.6.

They have the third best record in the league since firing their coach, 20-8. They were 15-20 before firing him. That's a ridiculous turn around just by getting rid of the coach.
I mean it's not like the team changed other than Rondo/Lou swap. Hell they actually had a ton of people hurt when the change happened. Hunter has been out for quite some time.

i have never been a fan of the SVG hire and i still don't think he is the one who will take this team to the next level. That being said, the woes this season are on griff and his roster construction.

Griffin traded for Adams
Yes, Griffin made that blunder. However, Stan continues to play him late in games when it does not make sense. He also makes simple coaching errors like not advancing the ball when obvious at ends of games. His rotations are questionable. I would imagine we are stuck with him for another season before we finally try to find a coach that fits this team.

Those of you saying "Stan can't relate to the younger players" need to recognize that one of the main reasons that the team has struggled this season was all of the poor performances by Bledsoe, Redick, Melli, and Adams.

Our young players have progressed nicely and are continuing to get better.
