BI might have saved the season tonight.

Another loss to make it 5 in a row with all the injuries had the potential to torpedo the team. I love this small lineup though. We need to play with that more when it allows. Naji is plenty tough to play down low and BI plus Trey have 7 foot reach. Most of all though when we needed him to be a superstar the most BI came through tonight.

Was the best game from a Pelican this season. Looked like playoff BI

Not taking anything away from BI, but Portland has a bottom 5 defense. They're 27th, so let's not say the Pels are back just yet.
2 positives I saw tonight that I haven't seen much of recently was
1) lots of multiple efforts from multiple players on defense. Those efforts stack and do things like turn deflections into steals. When only one or 2 guys hustle those deflections don't turn into steals.
2) BI finding a soft spot multiple times in what had to be a zone defense. Normally going zone causes the Pels all kinds of problems, but this zone had a soft middle at the FT line so BI parked himself there, his teammates threw it over the top for him and he took the open 17 footer like it was a layup.

Also, Jaxon Hayes stepped up. Played his role well even with the jarring.

No reason Hayes shouldn’t have been getting run this year, particularly with the injuries.

BI made a lot of shots. Contested.
Ball movement wasn’t great and when they did it left wide open shots.
I just don’t get it.

Agreed. I don't care if he's a moron that doesn't know where to be, put him in a limited role where that doesn't matter and let him be a disruptor and energy player for 10-15 minutes every 2-3 games.
A post game comment from CJ that I found interesting was that Willie simplified the offensive playbook. Portland has a terrible defense so you can't take much from this game, but simplification could help with the lack of movement. They definitely were more active tonight.

For sure, No defensive force from the Blazer save Thybull. Tougher test with GS but I like Dyson, Hayes, and Kira in the rotation. Naji played well also.

I love this small lineup though.
Small ball lineup the majority of the game and we get the most points in a game in what seems like weeks. Willie needs to be smart and continue those lineups.

He's inconsistent and a hot head. You ain't Meta, young man!

He made some really nice passes out of the double team last night

Simplified the offence?
WTF?
What could be more simple than dribble out the clock and throw up a contested shot?
Thats what it looks like at times.

Agreed
And Portland was missing their best defender.
Still, it’s a great sign they maybe can still turn this around. As it’s forced Willie to adjust when he’s been unwilling most season. How he is just having the light come on about using Herb differently idk.
I think the next two games will be the real barometer. And show whether this is the Pels pulling themselves off as they were sliding off the mountain into lottery abyss, or we just happened to grab a branch while falling and slow our death for a moment. As we play the Warriors and Kings.

Because Willie wanted something he didn't have. Willie needed to accept what the roster was and make the most of it rather than lean hardest on the pieces that fit his vision. I'm sorry, but as much trouble as we've had all season with bigs besides Larry defending the P&R, you couldn't find any way to use him at least a little? Leaving JV in to get burned in drop coverage or going small and getting killed on the boards is a big part of why the team fell below .500

Agreed. With Zion again missing so much time, Hayes playing/developing alongside Jonas and Nance would be the best strategy.
There’s a gaping hole at the 4 and that must be considered a constant at this point with Zion being injury prone.

I still don't know why we have all but abandoned the dual big lineups
Even the Dunc'd On guys were baffled cause they were going through how it really papered over a lot of our interior issues and forced us to get out in transition better due to having a guy like Hayes/Nance to offset JV's liabilities. How it gave us a size advantage in almost every matchup and they felt it led to a lot more success getting offensive boards and cleaning up inefficiencies.

I was bullish on the Pels making a run post-ASB but that Orlando game changed everything for me. I think all the win last night did was keep us from going on an 8-game losing streak. We still have GS, SAC, and Dallas due up on the road trip. I’m going to see if we can compete like that against an actual playoff team before I buy back in.
After those 3, we have a nice easy 7-game stretch against non-playoff teams, but then back into the fire for the final 9 games of the season. Personally I think we need to win 7 out of the next 10 to have a shot at finishing above .500 and avoiding the play-in.

All 3 of those have below average or worse defenses and I don't believe any have imposing, rim protecting bigs. So hopefully the Pels are able to use some of what worked last night against them.
